What do you use? Does it have to just be a tub of ready made dr oetker (sp?) frosting or is there something I can make at home?

Just melted chocolate works perfectly.

D you mean to mix in with the cake crumbs Grapes. Does it not make the cake go hard?

VikingVagine · 02/07/2012 17:29

The stuff to stick the cake crumbs together can be anything which will go slightly hard in the fridge (chocolate, buttercream etc), then you dip them in melted coloured chocolate (you can just buy a bar of white chocolate and food colouring rather than buy candymelts, add a little butter or shortening if it's not runny enough when melted).

Ah! I use the cake pop making machine on this thread which just used normal cake mixture in the middle not the crumbled cake/icing sort. The ones I do are much less sickly and then you just dip the cake in chocolate. There's a link on that thread to a pic of the ones I have done.
HTH Smile

Yeah, I think if I was going to be making them on a regular basis I'd buy the machine, because the crumbled cake and icing is really really sickly.

Ooh i'm going Lakeland tomorrow, was thinking of making cake pops for ds's birthday instead of cupcakes.
Do you just cover them in melted chocolate?

memphis83 · 04/07/2012 09:57

After pressing send I realised just melted chocolate or is there other things you can use for different effects/textures?

TheHouseofMirth · 04/07/2012 10:08

memphis83 it's mainly melted choc with various decorations on top but have a look at Bakerella for some seriously amazing cake pops!

I made a huge batch yesterday and my sponge was so moist that I only had to use a couple of spoons of chocolate to bind the mixture. Not sickly at all!

TheHouseOfMirth, i haven't made cake pops before, simple to do are they?Just checked out that website, brill ones on there! probaly should have a go as i have a 3yr old grandson which finds cupcakes too much to eat which is good news for me as i end up scoffing what he leaves behind.

TheHouseofMirth · 07/07/2012 22:40

nannycook they're basically simple (obv not the Bakerella ones!) just a bit fiddly. Many recipes tell you to bake a cake first but you can just buy a ready-made madeira cake and make them with that or next time you make cupcakes, put some in your freezer and when you want to make cake pops just defrost them! (I had an awful lot of cake left over from my son's birthday party which is why I made mine)

You'll need lolly sticks which you can get from eBay or a cake decorating shop and white or milk chocolate to coat them plus sprinkles or anything you fancy to decorate.

For simple ones your grandson can help you make you whizz the cake in a food processor to make cake crumbs. You are aiming to make balls with the stuck together crumbs so depending on how moist your cake is you may need to mix a little frosting, cream cheese or melted chocolate to bind it. Dip your sticks into the melted chocolate and push the stick into the ball. Put them on a tray in the freezer for 20 mins. When they are out, cover them with the melted choc and decorate with sprinkles etc.
