Both of mine ( 3.6yrs and 22 months) loves nuts. Cashew nuts, pistachios and almonds mainly. A bit worried about choking especially with the smaller one, although I do split whole nuts in half for her. Is this safe enough?

We do have nut butters too but the younger one doesn't like handling the sickness of it on toast.

DD2 has has nuts since she was small, she's 6.11 now. She loves all kinds of nuts but when younger had nutty crackers or crushed nuts rather than whole ones. She loves seeweed wapped peanuts from health food shops too. Amazingly the only thing she's ever choked on was a peanut butter sandwich that she hadn't chewed properly!

I think what you're doing is fine, as long as they are supervised while eating.

What are nutty crackers? Sounds like something they would both love!

My 22 mo has whole nuts. I try to crush them for her but the little blighter mugs me for them before I get a chance to most of the time!

At a BBQ recently my DD hoovered up the plate of pistachios. I was struggling to spit them and hand them over to her, she would just grab! Another parent there was aghast at her eating nuts, even split in half ones and kept telling me she would choke. I am a bit too laid back maybe with these things as I did BLW so even when they start to gag I just ignore as really it is best to let it sort it self out. So I was worried that I might be a bit too laid back with the nuts though after what that parent said.

Cashews are very soft. I wouldn't worry about them for a nearly 2yo who could chew well.
I wouldn't offer almonds to an under 3 without feeling rather nervous, dunno about pistachios (don't like them myself). Maybe.

I just raid the nuts section at health food shops, get loads of goodies that way! DD2 loves fresh walnuts esp after DM taught her how to open them with a butter knife Hmm

Yes I did give DD nuts before the recommended 3 years. She was BLW and used to having what we wree having and went mental everytime we had nuts and she didn't. She still loves them now.

Baby no, toddler yes.

2 year old eats the 'softer nuts' like cashews, walnuts, pecans etc

Wouldn't give a large brazil nut though.. But crush and add onto frosting if making cakes :)

I do give baby ( well 14 months) nuts btw just not whole as hasn't many teeth

Wheresmycaffeinedrip · 04/07/2012 13:09

My dd has had nuts from about two she loves them some i would split I'm half but pecans she ate whole. as for dd2 I'm sure she probably been slipped a few by her well meaning sister

choceyes · 04/07/2012 15:48

Thanks for the replies!

I buy big bags of broken bits of cashew nuts, so they are never whole anyway. They enjoy eating them at bedtime while reading books.

They are a great snack aren't they. Portable, nutritous and filling!

There is no recommendation to not give before 3.

Current research shows nuts can be eaten during pregnancy and used when weaning (provided in the right format obviously so nut butters for very little ones)

choceyes · 04/07/2012 15:54

oh yes I knew nuts are ok when PG and from 6 months on, but wasnt' sure about giving whole nuts to toddlers.
