Anyone fancy joining me for a week or 2 of living on what's in the freezer?

I have 2 fridge freezers, one is due to go in the next couple of weeks but both the freezers are full. Hmm The fridge is fairly well stocked too and the store cupboard has all the basics.
So we are going to be living off freezer contents for as long as we can.
Anyone fancy joining me? I figure it will save a bit of money in the process and encourage some creativity.

I have 4 packs of butchers sausages in the freezer left over from an earlier sausage craving at the beginning of my pregnancy.
I have got 1 pack out (black pepper and bacon) which I intend to create some bean/sausage thing to put in the pack of mini wraps I have in the fridge with salad and grated cheese for tonight.

We also have a few ready meals from when I was in hospital with DS so I'll stick one of them in the microwave for my lunch.

I will be back later to list everything we have in there, it will take a while Blush

Erm, I have peas and sweetcorn along with ice cubes and lollies so I'll pass thanks.

TitsalinaBumSquash · 26/06/2012 11:56

You don't fancy that for dinner Rhubarb?! Shock

I don't usually have a lot at all, I have had a few months of being slack trampled by morning sickness.

Just choose a meat/veg, then flick through some cookbooks or online recipes to find a good one and you'll have tea sorted for every day for the next 2 weeks.

If you have too much meat, put some to one side for sarnies or salads.

Peas and sweetcorn is a necessary freezer food I find Wink

sounds like a great idea, we will be moving in 2 months so think i should do this too, will start next week. Should save me some money too!

MarjorieAntrobus · 26/06/2012 15:08

Nope, I'll pass too.

I've only got bread in mine, plus a few leftovers, and ice cubes. It's only a teeny freezer above the fridge. Never really got into the hang of freezing actual meal ingredients.

I'm in the 'buy it then eat it' camp.

My plan of wraps had to be shelved after DP telling me he had a wrap for lunch, I have instead done boston baked beans wit the sausages and a cooked bacon joint and will serve with bread rolls from the freezer and salad.

:)

Ice, bananas and vodka??

I'm on...

This never works in our house. Our freezer is full of useless random bits.

When we move house and we run down our freezer we always end up with unapplealing meals like Fishfingers and sprouts.

slartybartfast · 26/06/2012 17:00

and i thought it was saving electricity by having a full freezer, or something?
tis a good idea, if you have food in your freezer though, to actually use it. raher than just freze it.

karatekimmi · 26/06/2012 17:12

I'm in if I can use the pantry supply of beans, and tinned tomatoes ( I seem to buy them every time I go shopping yet never eat them!! We have about 12 tins of beans!!) have fish fingers waffles meat, pies random left overs! Not sure it'll last 2 weeks though!

TitsalinaBumSquash · 26/06/2012 17:13

I think having a well packed freezer does save electric, the only problem is, I have 2 and one of them is going to a friend of mine soon. :)

It should work, I don't have anything random in there, lots of meat and veg mainly. I also discovered some Magnums DP didn't tell me were in there, I told him this was an offence worth leaving over Wink

Kimmi I have used one of my many tins of beans today for my Boston Beans, I just want to reduce the amount of food in my house in general! :)

Yup, I'm in....mine is far too full of bits and bobs and I want to get it empty and refill it with special offers and Useful Things...all in matching containers Blush I live in a different world in my head! Anyway, let's do it!!

stealthsquiggle · 27/06/2012 12:20

We are doing the same this week, as fussy bugger DH is away, and the DC hate shopping anyway so are quite happy to go with whatever comes out of the freezer. Last time we did it I found (amongst other things) some really nice steak with freezer burn and marinaded it for a while for a great stir fry. We have also had a couple of trips to the chinese cash and carry so there is always scope for obscene amounts of dim sum when we need cheering up.

I have not inventoried the freezer though - nothing so efficient - I just rummage until I come up with something which could be interpreted as a meal. Tonight's supper will be chinese-style pork belly slices, buffalo wings, and sweet potato wedges. We could also eat fish pie indefineitly from the amount of assorted fish we have in there.

twolittlemonkeys · 27/06/2012 12:42

I'm doing this right now - just defrosted the freezer and didn't realise how much stuff I had in there, which desperately needs using. Sadly had to throw out a bunch of food which was too badly freezer burned :( So yes I will join you. I know it's good to have a well stocked freezer but I am rubbish at rotating food so end up wasting too much. Will fill up the space with bottles of water or something....

TitsalinaBumSquash · 28/06/2012 08:20

I need to think of something to do for this evening, something healthy as DP is dieting.

I have a whole roast Chicken in there but even if I got it out now it won't defrost in time to then roast for dinner.

I have (amongst many other things!)

pork loin steaks
Minted lamb chops
Pork fillet
Casserole Steak
Sausages x 2 packs
a whole host of veg
rice
A huge Smoked Cod loin
3-4 Coley fillets.

Any ideas?

I also have a well stocked store cupboard and basics in the freezer.

suggest you do menu for the next week.

chicken could be roasted, cooled and used for curry
pork fillet - there's a nice barbecue recipe on here.

casserole steak - stew
sausages - toad in hole, or casserole with baked beans/toms onion, garlic, white wine, tom sauce or mustard
coley fillets - fish pie or curry.

i shop only periodically, so eating from freezer is the norm. having a meal plan helps so you know when to defrost.

i thought having 12 cans of baked beans/toms in cupboard was normal - or am i alone in bulk buying???
