Dairy free

I am trying to go dairy free as I am bf my DS and he has been having terrible wind and stomach cramps and a few days experimenting with what I eat it seems to be the dairy that is setting him off.

So my question is : what do I eat instead? I want to replace the dairy with something healthy rather than just cutting out a food group iyswim ?

Any tips appreciated :-)

There are lots of dairy free alternatives in all the supermarkets, usually under "Freefrom" banners, and also in the chillers.
Rice, almond, coconut, soya milks etc. Good luck.

You can get soya replacements, which are often fortified, for most things in the super market these days, and oat cream can be used in cooking in the place of cream. You can even get diary-free chocolate - which will not be healthy at all, but we all need our little treats!

Other foods naturally high in calcium are leafy greens like spinach and spring greens etc. and fresh figs?! apparently.

I recently bought a book called the intolerant gourmet, as my son has allergies, and I really like the recipes. You could consider a cook book if you think it will be a long term diet change.

You could always try to see a dietician, but you'll probably manage to find alternatives yourself quite easily. Also, you could post this in allergies as the parents there will probably have loads of experience in going dairy-free.

Good luck. It's really not too bad once you have a few meals/replacements under your belt.

This is an excellent book, and the website had a wealth of information, really would be a good starting point. www.godairyfree.org/

If you think it's the lactose that's the issue, try lactofree milk.

Thanks all for the suggestions and that website was really helpful thank you Smile

Will look more into lactose as well. It's the second day of being dairy free and there is a definite improvement in his wind and stomach pain so seems like I will be off the white stuff for a while!

Thanks again for your replies Grin
