Gluten free people - I need advice!

The GP has this morning informed me that he thinks it's likely I'm wheat intolerant and should try a gluten free diet for 6 weeks to see.
I had to go to Sainsburys straight after and found 1/3 of an aisle dedicated to gluten free produce and it's all so expensive. After traipsing around for half an hour I got so disheartened by the fact that this could be complicated. I thought well if I eat my own cereal in the morning and substitute the bread and pasta I'll be fine.

Doesn't seem that simple though.
So I wondered how you all do it? Is there a way for this to be simple and inexpensive? Any tips you could pass on please? Smile

DD3 has a mild wheat allergy but is fine eating gluten (wheat gives her the runs and causes eczema flares). She has been completely wheat free since Good Friday and her skin is amazingly better. As she is bf I am wheat free too just in case I pass wheat to her (there is very little research into this so I am just trying to keep her as healthy as possible even if it means no more take away pizzaWink).

I have tried lots of different wheat free/gluten free things but one thing to be careful of it something called 'deglutenised wheat flour' it's fine if you have a gluten allergy but not if it's wheat you react to so watch for it!

DD3 eats mostly home-made food but I do allow her the alternatives to what her sisters eat rather than a completely different meal (e.g. if her sisters have chicken nuggets, DD3 has home-made chicken nuggets with wheat free bread crumb coating). Some of the alternatives are very nice (the wafer chocolate bars in Asda are yummy) but some taste like florist's Oasis so it is worth your while going around the local supermarkets/whole foods shops and trying the alternatives out.

Often though you can find alternatives in the normal aisles - e.g. most crisps are wheat free but do check the ingredients even if they don't look like they would have wheat in them. Bisto Best is wheat free and is good for gravies and I make cheese sauce with cornflour rather than a roux as I used to.

Hope you find alternatives you like.
