Sushi

There's a shop at Victoria station that sells sushi, I love it because they do a tuna (cooked) and cucumber one. I love love love it. DP and DD won't eat the raw fish sushi.

So yesterday I ordered sushi rice, sushi mat, seasame seeds, tuna, cucumber, Nori, and rice vinegar. I'm planning on having a bash at making some later with my mum.

Anyone tried it? Heard that its hard but from the videos I've watched on YouTube it doesn't seem to bad? Or will I be eating my words later?

It's really easy to do. Just make sushi rice and roll up whatever you have! Other easy ingredients includes eggs, avocado, cream cheese, smoked salmon, carrot sticks. Eggs are usually sweetened, and the justbento/justhungry blog I linked below will have recipes for it.

If you need a bit of help with sushi rice (the sweet vinegar that gives sushi that special flavour), see the mix at the bottom of this page

This my attempt here - it was much easier than I thought! My only problem was that I had too much rice/not enough filling, but I know what to do next time.

It's not too difficult if you don't mind it not looking very neat and tidy. If you are making rolls make sure you don't put too much rice on the nori. Dampen your knife before slicing the roll. And if you dampen your hands too the rice won't stick to your hands. Smile Have a bowl of water and a clean hand towel nearby just to clean your hands. That makes me less stressed.

Did you look for Temaki sushi on youtube? That one's easy.

Not difficult, sometimes handling the sticky rice is a bit arm sticky. A good alternative if you don't fancy doing all the rolling is to do the rice and cut the nori sheets to size, then lay all the ingredients out and everyone make their own. Don't forget a little dish with soy sauce for dipping.

We had brilliant fun making it for a family lunch - we could have fed the whole street though we made so much. Grin

Oh brilliant tips thank you! Currently waitingmformthe rice to cool, already mixed in the rice vinegar, salt, sugar mix.

Got nori ready and mum laughing. DP looking at us like we've lost the plot. I'm so excited, how sad haha!

Love the idea of everyone doing their own at a family meal!

I found some good videos on You Tube and followed a few of those. The tricky part is getting your rice nicely sticky and tender but not mushy. Have fun.

Sushi isn't too hard to make but make sure you don't overload the seaweed with rice. And a very sharp knife is needed to cut the sushi up once you've rolled it.

Mmm I want sushi now.

UptoapointLordCopper · 14/06/2012 13:59

No need for very sharp knife - dampen, and cut quick. Obviously blunt knife will not do, but sharpish knife good enough. Though I do crave a very sharp knife (no homicidal tendency, just efficiency in cutting meat and tomato and carrots.)

I look at it like home made pizza. Mine is never perfectly round. But that just adds to the rustic value! The end results is always wonderful.

Avocado with cooked prawns or crab sticks is nice as is cooked crab, smoked mackerel or a soft omelette (add a teaspoon of soya sauce and a sugar to the eggs before cooking) if using farmed raw salmon freeze it first to destroy any parasite which might be present
