Swiss roll turret issue

OK, making castle cake and have been banned from using roll out icing over kitchen rolls for the turrets as "that's cheating". Hoping to use swiss rolls but slightly troubled that they won't hold up. I am intending to inset them into the bottom cake so that should give some stability and if I don't make them too tall do you think they will be OK? I have bamboo skewers and drinking straws to hand as well.

banned by who?

EnglishEcc · 07/06/2012 15:05

The birthday person. So, fair enough I suppose!

I've used Swiss rolls, with ice cream cones on top and butter iced and it was fine.

They should be fine you can add a couple of skewers diagonally through them and into the bottom cake if you are worried they might tumble. What are you covering the cake with? if they are going to be fondant covered then cover them separately before attaching them to the cake.

Thanks, yes, was going to fondant them and cover separately. Not sure how well they will hold up to being handled though. Was wondering about freezing them a bit first (the swiss roll I mean), or at least I would if I ever had any room in the freezer!

Yup, you can freeze them once you have given them a 'crumb coat' of buttercream. Make sure your kitchen isn't too hot if you fondant them frozen or they will sweat and go shiny. it does dry but leaves an odd finish on the icing.

ohh interesting reading for me as DD1 has just announced she wants a Princess castle for her 4th Birthday!

Seen some amazing ones online and was wondering how I was going to make mine look even half decent! :)

Would the cardboard tube approach be allowed if you then took the tubes out? I made turrets from pastillage using plastic pipe as moulds and let them dry for a few days. I left the roofs loose and put battery tealights in the bottoms of the towers - it looked spectacular and meant that no-one saw the flaws on the rest of the cake.

Bread sticks? Would that be cheating as well? They are edible.

How about using Cadbury mini rolls, they're already covered. You could use icing to hold them.
