Freezing strawberries. Yay or nay?

Couldn't resist markdown punnets and brought 2. When I got home I realised I already had 2 in the fridge...

Are they ok to freeze? I know they will be pappy when they're defrosted but I'd probably use them in a trifle or smoothies anyway.

Any other suggestions to use them up I don't want to eat them all tonight :)

I don't think you can, as they turn into mush when defrosted (due to the high water content I think). Would be OK if you wanted to make smoothies with them though, or jam. Smile

I don't have enough for jam, and I'm not really that much of a domestic goddess Grin

No - as LadySybil says they go mushy and watery.

LadySybildeChocolate · 05/06/2012 16:45

You could smoothie them, or ice cream? I'd make a compot; boil them with some sugar, strain and then freeze. Smile

i freeze bananas which are going brown then throw them in the blender with some yoghurt and frozen berries, including strawbs. Some honey too. Yum. Would recommend

LadySybildeChocolate · 05/06/2012 17:01

You can make banana loaf out of those also, Belle. Smile

You can freeze them, but they will be splooshy when defrosted.

Serve them with rum and crushed ice.

My mum - in the golden era of the freezer in the 70s and 80s! - used to pick loads of strawberries from pick your own, and freeze them. She made jam with them, and also a lovely strawberry purée - just cook from frozen with a shake of sugar, then liquidise. Delicious poured over ice cream.
