Cookig for grandmother!

Help!
My elderly grandmother is coming to stay for 10days. She is fairly typical of her generation. She mostly likes soup and a roll for lunch so I was planning on making pea and ham soup and lentil soup.
It's dinners that are the problem. She's a meat, veg and potatoes sort, we aren't. I need inspiration! I'm planning on Jamie Oliver's melt in the mouth beef stew, shepherds pie and a BBQ. Can anyone think of anything else?

I'm also going to make a crumble and some meringues which should cover puddings.
Thanks

Prob not to your taste, but she would probably like a chop. IME, the older generation like a chop. Grin

You could ponce it up by getting a lamb cutlet ( ie posh chop ). I would def keep it plain and simple.

You might want to consider a slightly more summery soup if the weather is good eg a carrot and thyme or watercress?

She might also like a salad with hard boiled egg and a piece of cold meat she could choose from butcher ( do you have a local butcher? ) eg thick piece of ham or tongue or something else you may or may not find unspeakable! And salad cream yuk

Wow my family just tell my Grandad not to be a belligerent old fool ad to eat what he's given just as he demanded of my mum, brother and I when we were all kids Blush

Steamed steak and kidney pudding, or pie.
Fish and chips
Corned beef hash
Pork chops
Beef cobbler
Hotpot
Toad in the hole.

I used to work in a restaurant catering for that sort of thing!

Oh god, I'd forgotten chops. What a good idea, thank you. I remember now that she's rather fond of 'oslo' chops, whatever they might be.
Mince and potatoes? Gammon and parsley sauce?
Great idea re: soup.

Well when I get to 85 that would piss me right off. Years of making sure everyone else is happy only to be fed crap when I can't manage it myself.

No offence, all families are different, but I think when I'm 85 I will want some payback Grin

ChopstheScarletduck · 01/06/2012 07:25

FaceCrack · 01/06/2012 07:26

ooo lots of replies - I meant that last post in relation to her just eating what she's given and being grateful.

Sirzy · 01/06/2012 07:27

How lovely of you to make sure she is happy with what you cook :)

Can you not ask her what her favourite meal is and cook that?

I agree fish and chips and similar things are normally a good option.

FaceCrack · 01/06/2012 07:28

My feelings exactly taffeta. She will bring a box full of tray bakes with her that she will drag down in her suitcase, along with jars of jam and cucumber pickle. Grin

I would sirzy but she will just say "I will eat anything". Smile

Thanks for all the replies.

My elderly mother lives with us and I cook (freeze small portions) for her separately. She does like a nice chop, one scoop of mashed potato, and veg. She loves Mash Direct turnip, carrot & parsnip and it is easy for me as I freeze them in small spoonfuls too. They don't eat a lot at that age, so don't over face her. She likes a little mint sauce with lamb chops, apple sauce with pork. I do stew, steak, carrot & onion in the slow cooker. Shepherds pie, fish pie, mince pie etc. Some nights she likes a light tea, a sandwich, scrambled egg or a sausage roll. Good luck and enjoy the visit :)

My 'meat and two veg' granny got to 92 before she tried pasta and was a lasagne fan ever after. My Dad (70-odd) only tried Chilli Con Carne the first time a few months ago and asks me for it ever since. I think, as long as you avoid anything that is very odd-looking or too strongly flavoured, your gran will probably enjoy trying something a little different interspersed with old standards like chops and pieces of fish.
