Does bourneVille cocoa powder make cake's taste of dark chocolate? I only really like milk choc and dont noRmally make chocolate cake as most recipe's call for dark chocolate to be uSed. I think my children are getting fed up of Victoria sponge!

no, you don't need to put a huge amount in for it to be choc flavour or colour.

skrullandcrossbones · 31/05/2012 09:56

I don't think that cocoa powder makes cake taste all that chocolatey myself. You could throw in a handful of milk chocolate chips, which will give a lovely milk chocolately flavour.

By the way, what's the difference between cocoa powder and hot chocolate powder, anyone? Is the choc powder just more sugary? I have to cook gluten-free now, and can only find gluten-free choc powder not cocoa powder...

its fine....add it in dry with the flour...makes the cake more darker....also i add gravy browning in chocolate and dark fruit cakes....gives it a luscious colour....if you are doing choc icing mixing it with icing suger...make sure you add hot water to cocoas then mix in the icing sugar...otherwise you end up with brown spotty icing ...hth xxx ps ave us a virtual piece x

Cocoa powder is all gluten free, there's no gluten in a cocoa bean.

albertswearengen · 31/05/2012 09:58

No- it just tastes of chocolate. You can replace a percentage of the cocoa powder with chocolate powder but not too much as the chocolate powder just makes it sweeter IMO.

skrull i think hot choc powder has milk and sugar added

cuppateaandasliceofcake · 31/05/2012 10:04

Thanks, will try make a chocolate cake later. I think instant hot chocolate powder has powdered milk and sugar in, not sure about the type you make up with milk. Mary berry does a chocolate cake with drinking chocolate but ive never tried it

HugeFurry - thanks re: no gluten in cocoa beans. It would depend on whether it's processed in a factory that handles gluten though, I think, in case of cross-contamination. I will look into it again.

thanks, made brownies using asda extra special 70% cocoa chocolate and they were vile. If anybody has got the recipe from the lurpak special offer in asda dont make it up. They were very bitter.
