Do any of you use a meat delivery company?

My nearest butcher is some distance away and I am wondering about using a delivery service as I am fed up of trying to fry/roast meat and ending up poaching it due to the high water content of supermarket meat Angry

Do you use a meat delivery company you could recommend?

I've bought some stuff at the Highland Show from Donald Russell and it was lovely. Alternatively, if you have a farmers Market near you, a lot of producers who attend them also have a local delivery service.

Riverford organics. They do a fantastic large meat box, excellent quality and variety. Has made my kids try and enjoy so many different types of meat. Their veg is great too

My mum swears by Donald Russell - I wondered who she was on about when she was telling me she was going to try his currySmile

I buy my meat from our local butcher who is just up the road, but he delivers around the area - maybe yours does the same?

My Mum swears by Donald Russell too.

I get stuff delivered from Laverstoke Park Farm. Its amazing quality stuff. The buffalo is very good from them too for something a bit different

Gincognito · 31/05/2012 06:42

My parents get Donald Russell too - we had their burgers at a BBQ over the weekend and they are really good - very low water content.

They do send you quite frequent leaflets etc. We're still thinking of getting some stuff from them.

chocoroo · 31/05/2012 06:43

We get ours with Abel and Cole too. Only had steak and chicken to date but it's been lovely and good value when offers are on.

We have used Donald Russell too and been delighted with the quality and service. Tried Westin Gourmet too but they were awful Sad

I order mine from Natoora. They get their meat from Moen and O'Shea's.

Kellamity · 31/05/2012 07:08

I have been recommended Westin Gourmet. What was the problem with them?

I was too - I guess it depends what your expectations are but the issues we had in one order were bad packing - not well secured and one of the packets had burst so there was watery blood everywhere, two items being underweight (quite a lot under the minimum weight in one case), and three things not having use-by dates on them. The quality also compared unfavourably with DR - it wasn't any better than ocado/sainsburys. I complained and they refunded me for the item which had burst everywhere.

I was pretty disappointed.

www.lovemeat.co.uk - I send their taster and student boxes to one of my student friends who otherwise doesn't eat meat, seems to be decent quality and great customer service. Smile

I've used www.keevilandkeevil.co.uk for meat a few times and been happy but I quite like the look of all the ready meals on Donald Russell now. Does anyone know if they're good quality and worth paying extra for or am I better off sticking with home made? Just thinking of convenience really as me and DH both work shifts.

YouGoonie · 20/06/2012 13:32

How does everyone find the prices of meat boxes compared to supermarket prices?

JimAndMaxsMum · 20/06/2012 14:15

It depends if you get them on offer, and if you pay postage.
A lot of the meat boxes I've seen online seem like a good offer but when you actually look at what's in them and the portion sizes it's not so good. Especially when you then have to add on at least another £5 for delivery.
But you have to consider that it's the quality you're paying for and that meat from proper butchers is tastier, will shrink less, etc..
There's a budget box from Keevil & Keevil which is a good price and free delivery, so looks like a bargain. But they have a Weekly box as well which is more expensive and with the postage charge it's pushing £50 for 2 people. I'm sure it's good quality but it's still a lot of money just for meat.
I've had a Weekly box from Allens of Mayfair before and that was around £50 as well, that was nice but I wouldn't buy it again.
Donald Russell are really pricey when they're not on offer and they tend to be quite small sizes too.
I've heard great things about Riverford and Abel & Cole, but not tried them yet.
Those Love Meat boxes look nice, and also just had a look at the ones on Westin Gourmet, but maybe not after the previous comments re them!

Thoroughly Wild Meat and Stream Farm are both brilliant if you have a freezer big enough to buy a large box of meat. I don't think they do weekly deliveries though. Where are you based? If you can find a Q guild butcher near you I have always had good results from them - and most will deliver!

JimAndMaxsMum · 20/06/2012 14:22

Yes definitely if there's a proper butcher's shop near you it's going to be better quality than the supermarket and better prices than going online. I don't have one near me though :(
