What sandwich/roll fillings for 3 year old's birthday party?

Hi all,

My DD is having a small 3rd birthday party on 9th June.

I've planned various foods and I'm planning on doing Sandwiches (with no crusts) or Filled mini rolls (cut in half) but I'm not sure what sandwich fillings to put in.

I'm doing plain Ham, plain Grated Cheese and want one other, but I'm not sure what is popular at that age. DD is so fussy that she will probably only eat the ham and cheese ones. Occasionally she will have Tuna Mayo but I'm not sure about other children.

Would you suggest Tuna Mayo or Egg Mayo or something else?

There will be cocktail sausage rolls, cheese & onion rolls and mini sausages aswell. Plus a large plate of cucumber/pepper/carrot sticks and tomatoes.

TIA

Jam

wishiwasonholiday · 29/05/2012 11:01

I second jam or chocolate spread

CMOTDibbler · 29/05/2012 11:02

Jam always seems to be popular

Adayforthinking · 29/05/2012 11:15

Thank you - I'm glad you mentinoed Jam.

Silly, I didn't want to mention it incase I got flamed by the 'Sugar Police' here on MN!! Grin

I'm guessing Strawberry is a safe-option.

if the sugard police are in operation, how about hummous?

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeGoes · 29/05/2012 14:13

I think strawberry jam, ham and cheese should keep most children happy. If you want less mess maybe Dairylea instead of grated chese. Marmite would be my next choice.

5madthings · 29/05/2012 14:14

i would do jam, i always do a selection with ham, cheese spread ie philadelphia its less messy than grated cheese which falls out everywhere! and jam :)

EightiesChick · 29/05/2012 14:15

Cheese, ham and jam are definitely the way to go. Have had it at numerous parties. The choice of food you describe sounds fine.

TheSurgeonsMate · 29/05/2012 15:56

Chocolate philly. The four year old at my two year old's birthday was thrilled with this, although the birthday girl barely noticed. Averaging out, it should be fine for three year olds.

PinkChampagneandStrawberries · 29/05/2012 15:58

I agree jam or chocolate spread Smile

bigTillyMint · 29/05/2012 15:59

Philly was/is always popular. Grated cheese will go everywhereWink

Adayforthinking · 29/05/2012 16:50

Oooh didn't think of Philly - thank you! Smile

I'm doing a sweet selection after I've cleared the savoury away - homemade Banana Muffins (made that morning, very quick, easy and yummy - extra for the Mums/Dads who will stay), Fruit Skewers (on large skewers chopped down so no pointy ends) with Strawberries, pineapple and grapes and good old Jelly and Ice Cream.

Yes, good thinking to not bring the sweet stuff out till you've cleared the savoury awayWink

SkiBumMum · 29/05/2012 17:24

My DD loves chicken sandwiches. You can get the roast chicken slices in Sains etc (not the yack circular stuff)

don't forget the Bears!

SkiBumMum · 29/05/2012 17:26

Oh and mini bottles of water are a novelty and much less mess than cups of squash etc. DD will always try and sneak in a Fruit Shoot though if there is a choice of mini bottles.

Adayforthinking · 29/05/2012 19:35

I was thinking of doing cartons of Orange juice, Apple juice and then some of blackcurrant squash. Again I was thinking less mess and spills...

Asda do their fresh Apple and orange juice cartons in the fridge area for 4 packs of 3 for £3.

Love the idea of roast chicken. Wish someone had said that egg mayo was ok, I used to love them. Don't know any 3-4 year olds that eat them though...

My DD liked egg mayo at that age, but jam, cheese and ham do seem to be the party staples.
