ideas to cut out diet fizzy drinks??

sophnchaz · 27/05/2012 13:20

Finally decided enough of the soft drinks!!! Has anyone cut these drinks out for good? I don't like water ( i know i should, and not keen on the flat drinks). I have type 1 diabetes, so no sugar.

Looking for advice from people who have cut down or given up :)

Thanks x

I drink fruit juice (mainly apple) topped up with cheap fizzy water.

Chinateacup · 27/05/2012 13:22

Sparkling water with a slice of citrus is good, or use sparkling to make up squash or dilute juice for starters.

I keep a big jug of water in the fridge with big chunks of lemon and lime in it. It's lovely, and not as boring as water.

AWomanCalledHorse · 27/05/2012 13:25

I just drink water, herbal tea or coffee (unless we're out, then I'll have a fizzy drink).
I dislike the taste of water (hard water area) but I find that a Brita Filter jug, kept in the fridge is lovely (esp, in this heat).

I think you just need to persevere with just water & eventually you'll get used to drinking it!

sparkling mineral water with either a small amount of fruit juice or fruit itself. Ditto with non-sparkling water.

BertieBotts · 27/05/2012 13:31

Buy squash, but the expensive stuff, not the cheap ones as they aren't worth it. High juice is nice if you find a flavour you like, also ribena (strawberry and blackcurrant, made up so it's as strong as the ones in the cartons!) and lemon or lime squash can be refreshing.

Belvoir do some amazing ones, lemongrass and ginger is lovely, and their elderflower one is nice (but a love/hate thing I think).

I accidentally picked up someone's 7up bottle at work the other day which had lime squash in and had drunk loads before I realised Blush so putting things in different bottles can actually trick your brain into thinking they're something else, too.

ChippingInNeedsCoffee · 27/05/2012 13:32

I drink tons of water, but it has to be cold - my 'treat' is carbonated water :) It's fizzy and much more refreshing than 'diet' drinks!

BertieBotts · 27/05/2012 13:32

Oh yes I also like cold water but not straight from the tap, eurgh.

Bottlegreen elderflower and pomegranate cordial with soda water - yum!

midoriway · 30/05/2012 11:14

This is my summer saviour, an old fashioned Soda Siphon. Spritz over posh squash, perfect. For something less sweet, a splash of angustura bitters. I am also very fond of campari and soda, a v low alcohol refreshing drink.

It lives in my fridge, and we never run out of fizz.

I got a soda stream and makes my fizzy water with it. I mix the fizzy water with posh cordial like bottlegreen and belvoir, or high juice. I make it a lot less sweet than the dilution ratio says on the bottle. After a while, you'll notice how sweet pre-mix juice and soft drinks really are.

Same goes with pre-sweetened yoghurt btw. I mix flavoured with natural ones to make them less sweet.

I stopped drinking fizzy drinks when i was pregnant with my first DC eleven years ago. Whenever i've had the occasional one since then, i've had a terrible stomach ache.

I know you say you don't like water but are you chilling it? I don't drink ours straight from the tap, i always chill it first and it make such a difference. We have a couple of bottles which we refill and keep in the fridge.

Apart from water i drink elderflower or elderflower & pomegranate cordial. My DCs drink water, milk or occasionally apple juice. They've never know us to have fizzy drinks in the house though DD occasionally has one when we're out (DS thinks it's pure poison!).

If you don't like the idea of mixing it with still water, then you could always use sparkling.

IHaveAFeatureWallAndILikeIt · 30/05/2012 20:29

My mum has elderflower cordial with sparkling water, which is lovely.

Kewcumber · 30/05/2012 20:33

I can't drink anything fizzy (medical reasons) so had to give up cold turkey a couple of years ago.

Water (very cold in fridge)
Squash (lots of different flavours eg high juice lemon, elderflower etc Use it very diluted and even if it has sugar in I would have thought OK with diabetes)
Alcohol - wine or bloody Mary
Tea - I drink a LOT of tea now (even at parties Blush) strong wioth only a little milk.

Stevia?

butterfingerz · 01/06/2012 13:35

I'm making water kefir which is a very lightly carbonated probiotic drink, you can make it with herbal tea, various fruits, your own ginger beer etc. Tis very nice and easy to make if you can get hold of the kefir grains. Got to be better than a can of diet coke!

butterfingerz · 01/06/2012 13:37

Oh as poshbird says, water kefir is like kombucha but not sure if kombucha carbonates.

AdoraBell · 03/06/2012 03:22

Cold fizzy water with lemon juice. I don't like sparkling water so stick to still but OH has this when repeatedly weaning himself off coca cola. I've also had water flavoured with cucumber slices, great if you like cucumber.
