english recipe to cook with kids school - ideas?

Hi all,

We're an english family living in France.
My DD's teacher has asked me to come into their class to cook a classically english recipe. It's part of their "opening up to new cultures" project... not sure that they need opening up to english culture, it's everywhere already! Though we're in a very rural area where we're still a bit of a novelty...

So, any ideas on what i could cook with a class of 25 4/5 yr olds? I thought of fairy cakes but they're not really a new idea here anymore... i also thought of flapjacks as they definitely don't have those... but i'm not convinced they'll like those - lots of children are funny about raisins in things (my own DD being one of them). I could perhaps swap the raisins for choc chips...

Any other ideas/thoughts?

Many thanks in advance

Scones? You can do those plain to avoid the raisin thing, then service with a nice English jam!!

dreamingofsun · 18/05/2012 09:45

trifle
or flajacks without raisins?

Olympia2012 · 18/05/2012 09:47

was going to say toad in the hole but someone already did Smile

scones is a good idea because you can do a little ritual - take in a nice tea set and do it all properly.

Scones definitely! so quick and easy... and then the jam and cream afterwards... MMmmm!!

IamtheSnorkMaiden · 18/05/2012 12:47

A cream tea is very English :) Can you get clotted cream though?

Toad in the hole would have been my other suggestion too.

I make some mini toad in the holes (or toads in the holes?!?) - put a couple of cut up bit of sausage in each hole of a muffin tin then in the oven for 5 mins. Take out and half fill with yorkshire pudding mix - huge hit with my dc.

Another vote for scones here!

Cheese straws.

Blatherskite · 19/05/2012 07:06

Scones definitely. Easy to do, yummy yet plain enough not to upset any fussy palates and very classically English when served with Jam and cream.

Pies, one sweet one savory.
Trifle.
cheese and buiscuits - ok not really cooking.
Lancashire hotpot.
Beans on toast - easy if you can get the beans and sliced bread.
Roast beef?

nieveandarlo · 19/05/2012 16:22

roast beef?? have to say that one made me laugh!
