I don't see why not. I've never tried it.

hercules · 16/02/2006 18:42

I dont see why not but I would imagine the texture to be a bit yucky. Cant say I'd want mashed frozen veg!

iota · 16/02/2006 18:42

Yes you can. However if you want to use fresh veg, make up a big batch of puree and freeze in an ice cube tray. Then you can defrost a small amount as required

I think Annabel even advocates this, because peas particularly are frozen so soon after picking that they retain all their goodness. (Plus I reckon even Annabel got fed up shelling fresh peas!)

poppiesinaline · 16/02/2006 19:51

Can you re-freeze frozen veg though? Isn't it easier to cook a whole batch of fresh veg, puree it and freeze it in little cubes or bags?

beansprout · 16/02/2006 19:53

There's a limit to what you buy frozen in the first place so you'd have to buy fresh anyway?

Seona1973 · 16/02/2006 19:56

YES you can refreeze frozen veg once it has been cooked (Annabel Karmel says so!!).

Frozen veg can contain more nutrients than fresh veg especially if the fresh stuff has been hanging around in the supermarket or in your veg trolley for a few days. Frozen veg is frozen quickly after harvesting and retains more vitamins, etc.

poppiesinaline · 16/02/2006 20:13

Can you? Wish I had known that! All the times I cooked frozen peas and added them to my pre-made meals when I dish them up. Grrrrr. That will make my life easier.

I used to make baby food in batches and freeze it in ice cube trays but I know what you mean about fresh veg going off so quick. So every 4 days or so I'd buy 3 cauliflowers or butternut squashes for example and do a big batch. Then not buy any until I was ready to do the next batch that same day. I know it means going to the shops a bit more often though! Loads of times I went to the supermarket when we were having a big shop and bought all kinds of stuff to cook for ds then it went off cos I never felt like cooking for 3 days in a row!

Like someone else said, I used to use frozen peas - don't think I'd know where to buy fresh ones! Also used frozen sweetcorn, spinach and broad beans
