Has anyone tried Quorn?

Although I'm not a vegetarian I've been wanting to stay away from beef since it makes me feel sluggish. How does quorn compare to the real thing?

I only tried it once, ate a two person portion in a curry. Thought it was quite nice - til it exploded out of my bottom without warning an hour or two later.
Oops tmi, maybe I should have namechanged!!!!

Poledra · 15/05/2012 12:37

Makes ya fart like a carthorse. Tastes fine though Grin and veggie friends swear your insides will get used to it...

bigbadbarry · 15/05/2012 12:38

I really like it, but it isn't like meat. If you look on it as just an alternative ingredient it will be fine. If you are expecting a delicious steak, not so much :)

Frontpaw · 15/05/2012 12:38

I haven't eaten the real thing for over 25 years now but I quite like quorn.

Not all of it is to my taste (the one with the tomato and olive sauce or the black pepper ones are not great). The lemon escalopes (the cheesy ones are too heavy) and the sausages are yum. I have used the mince/lumps in spag bol and lasagne but quite like the deli cuts in sandwiches. I havent tried the tikka bites/scotch eggs, etc as it looks yukky. I tried the sausage rolls once and they were ok.

Frontpaw · 15/05/2012 12:39

And I never ever fart (much) Blush

bigbadbarry · 15/05/2012 12:39

Oh, and the fajita chunks are addictive, I eat them straight from the packet :)

tightwad · 15/05/2012 12:40

I eat it. Not vegie but cant stomach beef mince.
So i use the quorn mince for spag bol, its nice, but try not to overcook it as it can be a bit soggy.
Also quite like quorn sausages, they are mcuh less fatty and nice with yorkshire puddings, mash n gravy.

Never had an exploding bottom after eating it!

Frontpaw · 15/05/2012 12:48

are the fajita ones nice and spicy? I may need to try some.

I usually overcook the mince so its slightly crunchy (but I do like burnt food), fried with onions and chillis. Yum.

bigbadbarry · 15/05/2012 12:51

They are not spicy spicy but they are flavoursome. And they put some secret ingredient in to ensure you eat the whole lot in one go!

Frontpaw · 15/05/2012 12:54

is it drugs?

bigbadbarry · 15/05/2012 13:00

I think it must be. Very reasonably priced, too ;)

Frontpaw · 15/05/2012 13:07

The slices are quite addictive too. I take one each time I ass the fridge then wonder there they all went!

BlackAffronted · 15/05/2012 13:29

Vile. Give me real meat!

NettoSuperstar · 15/05/2012 14:07

Tried it once, not very nice and it gave me rampant diarrhoea an upset tummy.

ShatnersBassoon · 15/05/2012 14:15

I like it and we eat it at least once a week. It's never caused us to have wind or explosive poos.

The mince is really convenient because you cook it from frozen, so it's excellent for those evenings when you're in a hurry to get something substantial prepared.

Beanbagz · 15/05/2012 14:19

Not tried quorn mince yet but we've had the sausages a few times as DD turned vegetarian two months ago (no explosive poos or farting here).

PartOfAWednesday · 15/05/2012 14:21

I'm not particularly keen on it but give it to vegetarian dd1 for the nights when we're having sausages or something equally quick and processed. She loves the "southern-style" chicken-type burgers and the chicken-type pieces, which I put in stir-fries. Another favourite are the scotch-egg style things which I think are horrible but she loves in her packed lunch. She likes the mince in chilli as well. I don't think it's all that nutritious so treat it as her equivalent of junk food. No digestive ill-effects, but with the amount of beans and lentils she already eats, that isn't surprising Confused.

PostBellumBugsy · 15/05/2012 14:24

No, but I keep having to say it like Jane Horrocks does in the advert!!!! Grin

pictish · 15/05/2012 14:25

I have. Quorn mince is like little teeny tiny pieces of rubber, and Quorn chunks are like larger pieces of rubber.
Quorn makes me feel ever so slightly queasy.

Houseworkprocrastinator · 15/05/2012 14:26

I am veggie so I eat it every day, I can't remember what meat tastes like so can't compare but there is loads you can get that just wasn't around when I stopped eating meat.
I especially love the snack eggs.

My children arn't vegetarian but rarely eat meat at home and they don't like lumps of chicken etc, guess they are just used to quorn so it might be difficult to get a child to eat quorn when they are used to meat.

D0oinMeCleanin · 15/05/2012 14:31

Quorn mince tastes of dried cardboard. Quorn chicken style peices are very nice. I've never tried the sausages.

Why not subsitute with turkey mince if you're not veggie? Turkey mince is nice.

Fillybuster · 15/05/2012 14:34

I use quorn mince about half the time at home - it just needs a bit more seasoning than beef mince, and you need to avoid it getting too dry. My dcs eat it quite happily in chilli, bolognaise, lasagne type dishes.

Great stuff :)

I'm not a big fan of any of the quorn 'meal' products though.

Frontpaw · 15/05/2012 14:37

I have just had a sauasage. Just remembered some leftover ones in the fridge from last night. Will update on the fart situation.

ecuse · 15/05/2012 14:55

It's fine as long as you don't expect it to be meat. No experience of the ready meal type things, but I use the chunks in fajitas and occasionally the mince, although it's a bit soggy. Sometimes use half and half beef and quorn mince in a bolognese just to cut down on fat.

Also my 12mo is obsessed with the 'chicken' slices for sandwiches. Odd. But I figure it's a good source of protein as she isn't much into meat and it makes a change from cheese.

supernannyisace · 15/05/2012 14:58

I like the sausages. Also the 'mince' - but it only really works in something strong tasting -like a chilli/curry. Trying to pass it off as beef in a cottage pie doesn't work, it is a bit bland,.

But hey - low fat - and kind to cows can't be bad Grin
