I mean REALLY. It's a pot of sugar! Jolly nice but hardly a first food, is it?!

OP posts:
goldstarlover · 15/02/2006 22:31

what's wrong with hipp jars?

Calista · 15/02/2006 22:31

Tesco's do Little Rachel's organic yogurts.

Calista · 15/02/2006 22:32

X-posts Flossam.

Nbg · 15/02/2006 22:32

Thanks Floss

goldstarlover · 15/02/2006 22:34

yes, one of the many reasons tesco annoys me....... bunging all organic stuff in a little section in the pizza aisle...

what is with that?

Racers · 15/02/2006 22:37

I found Asda pretty cr@p for organic meat. Usually shop at Sainburys, which isn't great, but is better. Haven't tried Tesco. I think I live in one of the few places (certainly cities) untouched by their presence. Also no Starbucks. It is like living in the 80's

colditz · 15/02/2006 22:38

GSL, they are aimed at babies of younger than 6 months old, they have meat and cocoa in, and they say you can give these at 4 months. That's why the 'jar' companies annoy me. You aren't supposed to wean babies until 6 months old, you certainly aren't supposed to give them meat or cocoa at 17 weeks old! Yet Hipp suggest that you can.

Tatties · 15/02/2006 22:38

Another vote for natural yogurt! I find it hard to eat on its own but ds loves it. Just shows how children do not need things to be laced with sugar in order for them to eat it...

goldstarlover · 15/02/2006 22:38

oooh racers... where are you? i wanna move there!

ShaysMummy · 15/02/2006 22:38

same question as gsl. whats wrong with hipp jars?

ShaysMummy · 15/02/2006 22:40

ooops.
my babe had some baby rice and yoghurt at 4/5 months.
and he's had petit filous!
im a bad mummy!!

Racers · 15/02/2006 22:42

GSL not telling - you'll all want to live here and the house prices will rocket! now, what else don't we have..? Oh yes, a multiplex cinema

Agree about natural yog - it's a bit sour to me, only use to make mint raita, but DD loves it. I do put some fruit in it sometimes though.

colditz · 15/02/2006 22:42

No SM, it's not mummies who annoy me. Ds was weaned at 16 weeks because my HV told me to, and I didn't know any better (this was 3 years ago).

It's companies who flout the government's weaning guidelines who annoy me.

flutterbee · 15/02/2006 22:45

I may be wrong but they only reccomend 6 months+ for weaning so that it doesn't clash with the exclusively breast fed for 6 months advise, because obviously weaning at 4 months means you can't be exclusively breast fed (duh I wonder how long it took them to work that one out)

I personally do not give a flying flip what the guide lines are I will be weaning my ds as soon as he is wolfing down 8oz of milk (ie drinking it really quickly and still appearing hungry)whether this is at 4 months or 6 months I could not care less.

IMO and this may not go down to well, if you can not make your own decision about these things then you really need to grow up and get into the real world.

I expect that most people who buy the bottles of food (yes I will buy them every now and again if I feel like it) are only buying them for ease and not because the label on the bottle told them to.

goldstarlover · 15/02/2006 22:45

they are just guidelines though

mummytosteven · 15/02/2006 22:45

agree with Colditz that baby jars should be labelled more responsibly - they NEVER seem to give proper advice re:gluten/meat etc and seem to imply a 4 month old can eat anything you can puree!

flutterbee · 15/02/2006 22:46

Hipp jars say 4+ months on them for those that were asking what was wrong with them

ShaysMummy · 15/02/2006 22:49

maybe the labels should have that 'bfing is recommended till 6 months' line thats on everything else underneath the 'from 4 months' line.
i always chose simple thing when he was little, like the plain fruit ones, i never gave him the chicken ones etc even though it said i could. i knew they shouldnt have chicken and stuff that early.
my hv advised me to wean him also.
he lost a lot of weight when he was ill at only a few days and never regained it so she said i needed to 'pad him out' a bit.

colditz · 15/02/2006 22:52

It's all just guidelines though. They could put 'From Birth' and it would be just guidelines. And there would be loads and loads of parents who would take that advice to heart, and give the bloody stuff from birth.

I have had a discussion with one of my friends, gently dropping into the conversation that maybe Pork Casserole isn't the best thing to give a 17 weeks old baby.

Her reply was "It says you can on the label, why would they say it if it wasn't true?"

New mothers spend more time in supermarkets and Boots than they do reading government weaning literature. It's no real surprise that they trust well-established companies more than the HV, when half of what they say is patently mad anyway.

mcmudda · 15/02/2006 22:52

I've got a Hipp jar in the cupboard suitable from 4 months with salt on the ingredients list.

colditz · 15/02/2006 22:53

McMudda, what is it?

colditz · 15/02/2006 22:54

I have to parp myself off in a minute, I get so ranty and pious on this subject.

I agree, mothers should wean when they feel it is best, but companies shouldn't be allowed to contradict the WHO!

threelittlebabies · 15/02/2006 22:55

Danone do ones called Baby yoghurts, with a pic of a smiling baby!! Mum from baby group told my friend there is a yoghurt on the market now made with formula milk?? Not sure if that's true. Friend bought some for her son, who is 20 weeks. I didn't!

So thought this thread was started by hunker...

colditz · 15/02/2006 22:56

I get ranty and pious, BTW, because my LO is nearly 3. I have probably forgotten as much as I ever knew about weaning

goldstarlover · 15/02/2006 22:56

the bloody WHO aren't the be all and end all. they are a set of people giving an opinion.

they also recommend you give your child the MMR...
so does taht mean anyone who doesn't is a bad parent?
