Cake Pops

MumbleMumm · 09/05/2012 10:33

I'm going to a baby shower on Saturday and thought I'd make some cake pops. I don't bake often and I want them to be as easy as possible so my plan is as follows:

  1. Buy a packet mix.
  2. Bake cake & mix with frosting
  3. Roll into balls and put on sticks (using some melted chocolate)
  4. Coat in melted chocolate (twice to avoid cracking)
  5. Add decoration (to be decided)

Does this sound right - I've got all this from reading various tutorials on t'internet. Any hints/tips to make them look fabulous whilst foolproof please do tell!

I would freeze the bare cake pops over night before coating as mine just weren't firm enough. Make sure you push the stick well in and also let your chocolate cool slightly before coating the cake pops as otherwise it just drips off.

Lots of ideas here if you haven't been on the site already.

I use chocolate fudge brownies instead of cake and fondant.
Only need one coat of chocolate.

Ive attempted Cake pops twice and agree about freezing the balls abit first. The first time I didnt and they kept crumbling into the melted choc.
Second time was better, although allow for a few mishaps.

Or do what I did and buy a cake pop maker from Lakeland. Perfect little balls of cake, no icing needed. Scrummy :)

When making them into a ball how much should I squid

Sorry - my 10.5 month old decided to grab the phone during that last message!

Thanks for replies everyone - just wondered how much I would need to squidge the cake to make it into balls, as you do it after cooking it right? Surely if you squidge them too much they become a bit heavy?

Make sure the cake has cooled completely before you ix it with the frosting.

Cake pops are quite solidly packed (not light like cake) so you need quite a bit of pressure.

Please can someone explain cake pops to me - I don't get it! Confused

MumbleMumm · 09/05/2012 20:36

It's cake on a stick! Not much more you can say - cute and quirky with a myriad of different things you can do - from simple to extravagant.
What's not to get?

I've made them loads - here's how I do it:

  • Buy slice of basics madeira cake from Sainsbo's and tub of Betty Crocker chocolate frosting
  • Whizz 3/4 of cake slice in food processor until crumbs
  • Add 2 tablespoons frsiting and whizz again
  • Cover with cling and fridge for 30 mins
  • Roll into small balls ( smaller than you think as they expand when covered in choc )
  • Put balls on non stick surface and freeze for 30 mins ( or longer, I have frozen for a day before )
  • Buy long lollipop sticks and candy melts in the colour/s of your choosing. I recommend medium or long sticks for better effect and candy melts over normal choc as you get it in loads of funky colours and it melts to a brilliant consistency for coating the balls. All good cake shops will sell.
  • Dip sticks in melted candy melts and then halfway into balls
  • Refreeze for 30 mins
  • Dip balls on sticks in melted candy melts
  • Stick in polystyrene holder or poncey cake pop holder
  • Decorate within a minute as choc dries fast

MrsEric - here

crazyday · 09/05/2012 20:41

Just make a bloody cake instead. You can make a really tasty cake from scratch in less than half the time it would take you to faff around with all those gross packet mixes full of trans fats which your preggers mate (and the rest of you) shouldn't be eating anyway!

Taffeta · 09/05/2012 20:42

Oh and there is no shame in buying the cake and the frosting. To my mind ( and I make amazing cakes if I do say so myself ) it is insanity to make a cake to then whizz it up in a food processor

Taffeta · 09/05/2012 20:44

But cake pops are fun. They taste a bit meh ( very rich, very sickly ) but they are fun.

Munx2 · 09/05/2012 20:46

Sorry the thread title made me wander in.

I have nothing constructive to add but am drooling at the thought of cake pops.

I was going to link this thread to Taffeta but I see she is on the case already, little to her she is very wise in the way of cake pops.

crazyday · 09/05/2012 20:46

Yeah if you are like 3 or something. They are this year's cupcakes - all furcoat and no knickers!

MumbleMumm · 09/05/2012 20:48

Crazy day - my cakes are pants, but my decorating skills are ace... have you seen the size of cake pops?!?! I don't think my preggers friend will keel over from having just the one. Plus we were told to bring cake, I just wanted to be different!

Listen not little Blush

Damn I want some cake now.

MumbleMumm · 09/05/2012 20:50

Taffeta thanks for your advice - that is a fab step by step guide :-)

If your cakes are pants and your decorating skills are ace then you are made to make cake pops!

Enjoy! And post a pic if you can! Love looking at cake pops.

MrsEricBana · 11/05/2012 10:02

Nope, still not getting it Grin - big slice of coffee cake and a cup of tea please! (dd would love them though)

MumbleMumm · 13/05/2012 03:52

Taffeta - I followed your step by step guide and they went down a treat. I took 16 pops with me, and only 2 were left! They loved them Grin

Grin

I do hope you weren't up til 03:52 making them Grin

Glad all went well

MumbleMumm · 13/05/2012 19:33

No thankfully - but it did take me the best part of a day - am hoping I'll get quicker with practice Grin

My 11 month old is still a frequent night time waker, hence the night time lurking on Mumsnet via my phone Smile
