The wrong kind of icing sugar?

I want to make butter cream for the filling in a Victoria sponge. I have accidentally bought "royal icing sugar" can I still use it or will it set hard?

it won't work.

and it's not a sponge.

buttercream icing needs to be rather soft - like butter.

Read the ingredients on the box (whats actually in there, not how to make royal icing).
It may have dried egg white in, at which point I probably wouldn't use it for butter icing, not sure why tho.

From memory you have to madly whisk the royal icing stuff to make it set hard, so you might be alright.

If you aren't feeling reckless though, why not try and make a teeny tiny sample of butter icing with it now and see how it tastes tomorrow?

I've made butter icing with it in the past and it was absolutely fine, it didn't set hard and the dried egg white made no difference that I could detect.

the fat in the butter would prevent the icing from whipping up properly into royal icing or from setting hard. It will be fine, as long as youre ok with egg whites beign in your recipe.

It will be fine, don't worry! I made buttercream with fondant icing sugar the other week, no one died, it was nice.

Thanks everyone! Luckily found an old box of normal icing sugar in the cupboard. Buttercream and jam now in the middle of my very yummy tasting "Sponge"!

Viking - it's creamed cake.
a sponge is made with little or no fat, and it gets its texture from the way it's mixed.
Victoria Sandwich is a creamed cake - has equal amounts of fat and everything else, and the way it's mixed is called creaming

however, in the description it does say
"Sponge cake is a cake based on flour (usually wheat flour), sugar, and eggs, sometimes leavened with baking powder which has a firm, yet well aerated structure, similar to a sea sponge. A sponge cake may be produced by either the batter method, or the foam method."
