Looking for a tasty, but mild (my DC will be eating it) beef curry recipe? Any recommendations?

HFW's chilli shin beef is nice....not really curry though.

Recipe

and I often make it without slicing the chillis ...just chuck them in whole which gives a decent background heat.

I've been meaning to try thisfor ages.
I've eaten it in Indonesia and it's gorgeous. I'd cut the chilli content though.
It's from his Far Eastern Odyssey book, and everything I've made from there has turned out really well.

Other than that, then Mamta's kitchen

That rendang looks good, but I would have to travel out of town to get some of the ingredients :(

Cats, that looks lovely! Have bookmarked it to try another time, as I am making this curry for an Indian themed meal.

Shame.
If I try it first I'll let you know how it is.
I'm trying to steer clear of curry for a couple of weeks, we love it, but I make it so often.
I recommend that book though, it's brilliant, a lovely read as well as great recipes.

Netto Just to warn you - DH has been looking for an Beef Rendang recipe for ages - but he's determined that it needs to be Indonesian and the recipe has to suggest a cooking time in excess of 2 1/2 hours to be authentic - the Aussie link you posted is for a Malaysian Rendag which is a different dish and likely to not to deliever the flavour you are after. My standard curry sauce for beef is...

Onion, small pieces of garlic and ginger, finely chopped & 1 red pepper, a red deseeded chilli pepper finely chopped (all the above can be blended with a little water to a paste if preferred)
Oil
1 teaspoon each cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds and mustard seeds
1/2 teaspoon ground coriander
1 heaped teaspoon ground turmeric
Chilli flakes or cayenne pepper to taste... (pinch for mild)
salt
Can chopped tomatoes or 400g passata

Chopped coriander, garam masala and plain yoghurt to serve.

  1. Heat the oil and add the whole seeds until they start to pop and sizzle.
  2. Add the chopped onion, garlic, ginger and red pepper (or the paste if you've made it) and stir fry until softened and taking on a little colour
  3. Add the ground spices and chilli (if using) and season with salt. Stir to combine
  4. Finally add the tomatoes and simmer

For a beef curry, add sealed beef pieces at this stage and bake in a low oven (Gas 2) for about three hours. Check periodically and add a little water if it looks too dry. Serve with some fresh green coriander & a pinch of garam masala stirred in at the end.

Back to the drawing board for a rendang recipe then.
Don't you just hate it when travelling and eating authentic food spoils you for eating it at home WinkGrin

Netto If you find a recipe that works for Beef Rendang please share it - dh has been going on about that dish since I met him 15 years ago - it must be very good! Grin

Beef rendang is gorgeous, it's served generally as part of a pedang meal in Indonesia, and you'd only get one piece of beef.
It's not served as a curry as we know it.
I'd still try that recipe, as I do rate Rick Stein, but I'd love something that tastes like I had it there.
