Recipe for macaroni cheese without white sauce?

I know this is kind of a contradiction in terms, but I'm not a big fan of white sauce and wondered if there might be some recipes out there which use cream or something instead and still bake properly?

Ideally something tried and tested by an MNEr...

Thanks!

I never make a white/cheese sauce anymore for macaroni cheese anymore after making this Jamie Oliver one I vary the cheeses, but always use the mascarpone for the base. It's particularly good with a generous amount of pecorino in, also goats cheese gives a lovely flavour too.

We used to have Neapolitan Cheese at home, we didn't like macaroni cheese.

Tin of toms,
Tin of condensed tomato soup
1 onion chopped
Macaroni
Sliced cheese - the original 60s recipe used Kraft cheese slices

Soften the onion in a little olive oil. Add the drained tomatoes, chopped a little and the condensed soup. Simmer for about 30 mins until thickened.
Pour over cooked macaroni, and top with cheese.
Cook for about 20mins at mark 4, until the top is browned and crispy around the edge.

I once saw a French chef extol the virtues of laughing cow triangles for macaroni cheese. Just mix them in with the macaroni, bit of milk, and top with grated cheese before baking.

Ohh let us know which ones you try and which you like!

Ooh! Just found this in Nigella Express:

Cook and drain 250g macaroni.
Whilst mac is cooking, put 250g cheese, 250mLs evap, 2 eggs + grate of nutmeg into food processor and blitz (or grate cheese and mix altogether).
Pour sauce over drained mac and season well.
Tip into wide shallow dish. Bake in v.hot oven for 10-15 mins.

The easiest and nicest one ive tried is a Gino D'Campo one where you chuck a load of milk and different cheeses into a drained pan of just cooked pasta.

Sorry, don't have a link but worth googling. He puts salami in his but I often leave it out and chuck some peas in.

I do like a good roux-based cheese sauce, but I make other versions, too.

If I am really lazy, I just stir Philly - and some black pepper & salt - into hot macaroni and then top with grated cheddar and a few slices of tomato and put under the grill. Think this has been mentioned already.

Also, 'Macaroni Pie' (not a pie at all, just a dense, creamy version of mac n cheese popular in the Caribbean). Lovely and easy to make.
You just cook macaroni until tender but not quite fully done. Drain it and stir in a dessert spoon of unsalted butter and roughly 350g of grated mature cheddar while it is still hot, so it becomes sticky and melted. Then add in 1 whisked egg, an American 'cup' measurement of milk, a teaspoon of hot mustard, salt & pepper. Pour into a casserole dish, top with knobs of butter, breadcrumbs & grated cheese and cook for 40 mins on medium- high heat.
