Why is dried fruit in 3 different isles of the supermarket??

It drives me potty. There are expensive small packs in the Fruit & Veg section, some in the baking/snacks section and some in the dry ingredients isle (by the lentils, etc). All in a medium sized Tesco's. The ingredients isle was the best for me on this occasion!

I had just as many problems finding dried fruit for an online shop! I didn't want to just search for 'sultanas' etc.... Make it logical please supermarket bods.

And don't forget there are some languishing in the fresh fruit and veg aisle too.

Yes!!! Why is this!!! Some near fruit and beg, some near 'health' foods and some in the baking aisle! You need a maths degree just to work out a) what is the difference between the 7 gazillion varieties of sultanas and b) which represents the best value. Which is probably why they do it I suppose.

veg!

MinnieBar · 30/04/2012 13:18

So they can charge you more, I think. They're obviously worked out you're more likely to get away with charging more in the (I suspect) 'lots of small little plastic bags of e.g. goji berries' section than in the '1kg of Sainsbo's own raisins' section.

If they are in a snack pack, then they are classed as luxury items and have to have VAT charged. If they are in baking, then they are staples and VAT-free.

SewCrafty · 30/04/2012 13:25

also, I believe, but don't quote me on it, that some have VAT on them and some don't, depending on if they're and ingredient or a snack.

Cooking section - for making cakes and buns
Snack section - beside the nuts for health nibbles
Health Secrion - for when you need the extra roughage!

Yes I agree! Picked up a big pack of dried apricots yesterday in Tescos veg aisle only to dump them again in the ingredients aisle for the larger, cheaper bag.

I like the section with this stuff in called "healthy food" - implying that everything else in the whole shop is unhealthy Grin

moonbells · 30/04/2012 13:41

crosspost :)

You do need to check the back of the bags to see if they have preservatives or veg oil in them. Holland and Barrett have the penny sale on now, so it's cheaper to stock up on thisy type of thing.

I am checking out the VAT thing! Not that it makes a jot of difference when it comes to the cost of children's clothes and shoes!

Oooh top tip about baking section!
