Use it or ditch it?

I've been spring cleaning my kitchen cupboards and found a granary hovis bread loaf mix that has best before oct 2010 on, oopps!

Do you think it will be ok to use or would I be likely to kill the dc's ?!

Doubt it'd kill them. Might not rise so well though.

Imnotaslimjim · 30/04/2012 10:20

Blueeyeshadow is right. It won't cause any harm but if its an all in mix and you don't need to add yeast then it might not rise as the yest might be dead

HeathRobinson · 30/04/2012 10:22

I'd ditch it. I'd be thinking it might not taste very nice, now.

kitcat83 · 30/04/2012 10:29

Ok thanks. Think I'll give it a whirl then with some extra yeast and see. I hate waste Smile

I'd use it as I hate waste too - its going to be cooked at 180c so anything lurking would be killed and if all you need to add is some water you're not wasting anything by trying it. Not sure if you'd need to add extra yeast as its dried anyway so it lasts for months in a sealed packet. It only 'comes back to life' when you add the water.

Let me know how it goes as I have one dated last July which I'll make up if yours works ok ;-)

EggyMcEggMcSandwich · 30/04/2012 14:45

I'd ditch it - there could well be weevils in there.

stealthsquiggle · 30/04/2012 16:11

would need to add yeast as if there were none in there but it will probably be otherwise OK not that I speak from experience or anything you understand
