HAving given up hope of ds1 behaving normally ever again we have today banned Ribena and it seems to have improved his behaviour - does anyone know of any good drink substitutes that have less sweeteners in them and preferably avoid the E numbers too as I feel today may be a fluke!!

ds has water throughout the day, and at meal times I add a little orange juice, then milk at supper. He's 2 and a half, and seems to know the rules!

My youngest two just have milk or water except at lunchtime. I have started giving them apple juice with their lunch - the only reason being to help us achieve the "5 a day" fruit and veg requirement! I prefer the concentrate because I can buy in bulk. Don't they "reconstitute" it to the same water/sugar content as occurs naturally? I thought the reason it was concentrated is to save transport costs and then when it reaches its destination the water is added back in.

Thanks janh for the weblink - will go and look at it now.

Concentrate is heat treated, to give it shelf life. This destroys most of the vits.

Invest in a juice maker, kids love mixing their own, its a great pick me up for grown ups too have a look at this

enjoy.

Water or milk.

that's all my dd gets except for when we go somewhere like the cinema, or parties, or meals out, when she will get juice. But at home she has milk or water and in her packed lunch box she gets a bottle of water.

From USDA , vitamin content of 100g unsweetened Orange juice, raw (this means freshly squeezed, unpasteurised) or from concentrate (no added Vit.C):

RAW. Concentrate
kcal: 45, 45
Calcium: 11, 9 mg
Magnesium: 11, 10 mg
Phosphorus: 17, 16 mg
Potassium: 200, 190 mg
Vit C: 50, 38.9 mg
Total Folate: 44, 30 mcg
Vit. A: 200, 107 IU

Ok, so the raw/unconcentrated/unpasteurised has bit more vits, but I don't think you can fairly say that being concentrate means that "most of the vitamins" have been destroyed.

Thanks zebra - that's great info.
