Mandolins

I was thinking of getting one, but DH put me off by saying they are absolutely lethal and I ok'd chop my fingers off!

Are they that bad? I have a food processor which I think has a chopping blade (round disc thing), so would this do the same job?

I use mine quite a bit and haven't had a cut but am very very careful and don't mind wasting a bit of veg towards the end in order to guarantee the safety of my fingers. You probably could do the same jobs with a food processor (although I've never tried) but I think the mandolin is probably quicker and less washing up.

Thanks karma. I thought they looked great, but DH has a real 'thing' about them. To my knowledge he hasn't ever had an accident with one, so I don't know where his phobia comes from.

I think I'll have a look in JL next time I'm in there. The food processor is all very well, but I don't have room to have it out all the time and a mandolin would be less hassle.

No problem! I am terrified of them too if I'm honest, hence why I'm so careful, but you can't deny that they make a good job of finely slicing veg.

I have two, one slices disc shapes, the other juliennes. They are brilliant if you are careful. They come with a plate thing to hold your veg in place when slicing. However, if you can have your food processor out all the time, then you can just use your processor to do the same thing. I tend to use my mandolines for small jobs, and the food processor for big ones. (I have my FP on the bench).

I bought mine off amazon btw. It's this and this

I have one and used it ONCE without the guard and it took my neighbour twenty five minutes to stop the bleeding. I still have the scar where I took a chunk out of my thumb.

Now I use the guard as per instructions and I love it.

I would love one (at least until I save up for a new food processor) but considering I draw blood regularly with a veg peeler then I think for my own safety it would be a bad idea.

I can't even watch tv chefs using them. Gives me the real heebie jeebies.
