14 month old won't eat fruit

hello, hope somebody might be able to give me some advice.
My 14 month old DS has never been he biggest fan of fruit, but would happily scoff a couple of banana's a day and some melon as a snack and the odd kiwi (he has never been fond of hard fruit like apples unless I stew them a bit with some sultanas) However now he is flatly refusing any fruit I put in fromt of him (he is still eating veggies), but I am worried about his diet and the amont of fibre he's getting. Any suggestions?
By the way he is not spitting it out, as he won't even pick it up or have it anywhere near his mouth.

If he is having a balanced diet otherwise, eating veggies etc, then I would be tempted to have a complete break from fruit then reintroduce it slowly in a few weeks: A few weeks off fruit will not hurt him and he might "forget" his aversion to it - it works with my DS.

Have you tried dried fruit? Supermarkets do little boxes/bags of raisins, apricots etc that look like a bit like bags of sweets! I know he's young, but he might like holding the packet and munching them!

Good luck.

smoothie?

mabel1973 · 09/02/2006 08:57

hi
yes he will eat sultanas / raisins but won't entertain the idea of a dried apricot!
i like the idea of smoothies though!

Have you tried chopping the apricots into raisin sized peices? You probably have

I had a fruit refuser at that age, I'm afraid, I just persisted and persisted, and a whole 18 months later he will eat babnana, apple and pear, along with raisins.

If I were you, I would just keep going with the veg[

No I haven't actually - will try that!

Hello

just to let you know I have just made a banana, mango and melon smoothie for DS for lunch, he ate it with a spoon and polished off the lot!
Also tried chopping the apricots and that worked too!!
he's obviously not as fussy as I thought
Thanks for your suggestions

please will you make me a smoothie?

DS2 (now 4.5) started refusing fruit around 12 months and still doesn't like it, apart from raisins and the odd bit of mango.

It's really a texture thing with him and he gags on it, though he eats all other food, including meat and vegetables.

He will eat any fruit as long as it's pureed, though, so I buy him those Organix Goodies pots. He also eats coooked pear now in things like crumbles, so would probably manage cooked apple. He'll eat dried fruit/cereal bars as well.

He chews other things like meat and vegetables, so it's just fruit.

singersgirl - yes I think it is a texture thing with my DS, as he really enjoyed his smoothie, so obviously taste is not the issue.

MamG - now I have my blender back out feels like I'm weaning him again, so smoothies all round!

My DD (20 months) absolutely loves stewed fruit. Also I find that chopping an apple or pear up and putting it onto one plate for DS and DD to share works wonders. Maybe in the summer you could try soft berry type fruits. Also at that age DS loved grapes. DD will not try them. But you never know...

hornbag · 09/02/2006 14:46

"Banana Surprise" -simply a banana mashed up with fromage frais stirred in .

We jokingly named it this when DD was a baby and even now (aged 6) she'll still ask for "Banana Surprise" but would turn her nose up at "banana and fromage frais" .

I have tried grapes andchopped up apple / pear, but he's not bothered.
In september we went blackberrying quite a bit and he would just eat them straight from the bush, but I bought him some blueberries a couple of weeks ago thinking he would think they were similar to blackberries but not interested!

After a while I just gave up with DS2 - he refused fruit at all those toddler sessions, even if everyone else was tucking in. I tried exotic fruit (rambutan, persimmon, pomelo) without any success. I tried everyday fruit with jsut as little success. He did love dates at one point, but they're so sweet....

Every so often I try to get him to try another type of fruit, but generally I concentrate on vegetables, since he will eat those.
