Just what it says realy ds has just turned 8 and I have always served him on to a side plate so as not too give him too much. Now he has outgrown many child meals in resturants I was wondering if I should start using a dinner plate for him ? Does anyone remember when their dcs started eating adult size meals ?

My dd1 also 8 has a dinner plate, as does my dd2 who is 4. Mainly because they have more room when they hacking cutting up their meals.

DS is 9 and has a big appetite. He has a full size plate, but I don't completely fill it, nowadays he gets a little less than me of everything, probably the same as a very small adult. I give DD who is 5 a big plate too, as she wants the same as her brother, but make sure her portions are considerably smaller. If they are still hungry, they can have seconds (if there are any) or a bowl of yogurt and / or fruit. I do have some tiny brightly coloured pudding bowls that they both love to use and have been around since DS was a toddler. These have the great advantage of keeping pudding sizes down on those days when we have a proper pudding.

Open hand for veg
Fist for carbs - pasta, rice, potatoes
Palm for protein
Thumb for fats - mayo, butter, cheese

Works regardless of age because its personal!
