... but why do people give juice to babies (under 12m) apart from when they are constipated, that is? is it cos juice 'for babies' is in the shops so people think it's just something else to buy?

really not criticising, just wondering why it is thought necessary?

Drinking juice has LOTS of health benefits, even shitty apple juice which has been on the shelf for years has proven effects on heart health.

But not necessary I agree - I think people just want to introduce their babies to varieties of tastes because they are cute and it's fun.

BudaBabe · 07/02/2006 22:04

I gave juice becaue although I love water (ice cold only though) I think it tastes disgusting out of a plastic cup so added about 25% pure apple juice.

DS is now 4 and loves juice and also water. They only have water during the day at school except at lunch and he's fine with either.

I really don't get teh "juice is as evil as coke" thing tbh!

Now that really IS scary colditz

misdee · 07/02/2006 22:06

why is ribena not suiatble for children under 36months btw?

NotQuiteCockney · 07/02/2006 22:06

Juice is better than coke, but not much better. When you make juice, you throw away a lot of the health benefits of eating fruit, but you keep most of the sugar.

Moomin · 07/02/2006 22:06

good post morningpaper.

and DO excuse me if i haven't followed every single thread on this before.

My dd (11 months) only drinks water. I have tried her with apple and pear jiuce but she prefers water, as does dd1.
Why did i try her? I suppose to just let her taste!

SorenLorensen · 07/02/2006 22:07

Can I roll my eyes too - even though I don't actually care that much?

Flossam · 07/02/2006 22:07

Actually this is one of the things that does get on my tits about this place at times. I try my hardest to do my best by DS but at times there does seem to be a 'holier than thou' attitude towards 'them' which irritates me.

misdee · 07/02/2006 22:07

juice for babies is up there with the macdonalds threads and breast vs bottle

colditz · 07/02/2006 22:08

It's true! Honestly, most of the people I know who have had babies will only feed them jarred food, and tell me I'll upset my (so far unborn) baby's stomach if I wean him on mashed potato! (fresh not instant, before I get pounced on! lol)

handlemecarefully · 07/02/2006 22:08

Sorry moomin, it's one of my parp subjects (one of many) - I'm just an intolerant old cow.

It wasn't a fgs aimed directly at you as it happens...

VeniVidiVickiQV · 07/02/2006 22:08

Im sorry Moomin, did you forget what you titled this thread already?

Twiglett · 07/02/2006 22:09

I give my kids juice because .. shock, horror .. they like it

I don't care ..

there is much to be said for pleasure in life

they also drink water .. and god forbid but sometimes I let DS have lemonade too

shoot me .. shoot me now

Well colditz i hope you don't add salt!!!

Roobie · 07/02/2006 22:09

I must admit I used to buy those expensive bottles of Hipp Organic ready made juice for dd - put it down to first time motheritis! She started on it as a baby and now won't drink water although I can now get away with a miniscule drop of Rock Cordial.
As a result 9 mth old ds has had nothing but water to date and I plan to keep it this way.

sorry if some people think i'm judging or trying to get on people's tits. it just never occured to me to give dd anything but milk or water before she was 1 as the 'baby juice' in jars next to the baby food looked like squash to me. am interested to hear about getting babies to taste different things, i hadn't thought about that.
i don't wish anyone to get their arse in their hand about this thread but they are quite at liberty to do so if they so wish of course

misdee · 07/02/2006 22:10

no-one knows the answer to my ribena question then?

handlemecarefully · 07/02/2006 22:11

Must just add, one of the reasons I get irritated is parents who (again, this is not personally directed, but a general observation) don't give their children juice or crisps etc ever (and similar), but happily imbibe vast quantities of alcohol, fast food etc etc.

Not advocating that we should feed our children mush (I'm a fairly keen 'nutrition observer' as it happens) just - (i) everything in moderation, and (ii) some consistency please

I don't feel holier-than-thou, just amused and incredulous. I don't think there is anything wrong with giving babies juice, actually, or jarred food, it is just the idea that there are people slavishly buying jars, because Cow and Gate have brainwashed us as a nation into thinking that what we cook isn't good enough for our babies.

That is what makes me cross, not what people choose to give their babies, but that baby food companies are allowed to continually flout government weaning guidelines.
