mykidsmum · 07/02/2006 19:49

I always get curry from my chinese yum

Moomin · 07/02/2006 20:00

it's definitely a different type of curry sauce to that at the indian restaurants but all the chinese takeaways/restaurants i've ever been to have done them. Not sure how 'authentic' they are though...!

NotQuiteCockney · 07/02/2006 20:02

I'm pretty sure curries are originally from India. But you certainly get a particular kind of curry from Japan.

hermykne · 07/02/2006 20:14

yeah i think the takeaway/chinese restaurant ones are just some sort of concotion of sauce like black bean or something and the flavourings are not authentic

Am chinese myself and there is a curry although not sure it is an 'orginal' dish as such but more likely imported and then tailored to chinese tastes!!

sorry tend to eat just want is put in front of me!!! My own cooking tends to be more of the Jamie Oliver variety ie follow a cook book! I know my mum makes this paste which has things like orange peel in it!!! SORRY!

Mercy · 07/02/2006 20:59

I have seen the curry sauce (ready made obv) in Asian/Oriental supermarkets.

Racers · 07/02/2006 21:16

Yes, I've used the Blue Dragon curry sauce with my own egg fried rice. It's fairly similar to the curry sauce you get in your local Chinese takeaway. No idea how authentic though!

vickiyumyum · 08/02/2006 11:39

according to Kai, yes there is such a thing as a chinese curry! although it has regional variations, and apparently much more likely to be found in the sezcwan (sorry spelling) area, than other areas as they have more spicy food.

doormat · 08/02/2006 12:07

hermykne · 08/02/2006 13:38

oh didn't ask, just asked if such thing as chinese curry authentically. am seeing him tomorrow evening and will ask him then.

blueshoes · 08/02/2006 14:28

Hermykne, I agree with you. I would think of a Chinese curry as one which originated in South-east Asia eg Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia which have immigrant Chinese populations that have adapted the local curry (prob originated in India). The curry mixes sold in Oriental would originate from these countries. Coconut milk based.

The Japanese curry is quite different. Sweetish.

I have never thought to order a curry from a Chinese restaurant in the UK!

colditz · 08/02/2006 14:32

Chinese curry is more like a sweetish gingery chilli thick sauce than a 'real' Indian curry. It is very nice though.
