I'm hoping to be able to get some in the local Tesco. Does anyone have a good recipe they can recommend? Preferably spicy. TIA

quarter some small potatoes and boil 20 mins til tender. meanwhile fry cubes panneer 5 mins in veg oil. Remove and set aside. Fry curry paste- 2 tablespoons ish. Add sliced onions and fry til soft. Add potatoes panneer tin of chopped toms frozen spinach and frozen peas. Veg stock 1/4 pint water. Bring to boil and reduce heat. Simmer until you have cooked some basmatti rice (seperately) and or heated a naam bread.

Madras Paneer, the recipe was on the packaging a few years ago, it goes something like this:

Fry a chopped onion and finely chopped chilli in 1-3 tbsp of curry paste for a few minutes. Add a carton of passatta and cook for another 10-15 minutes. Add cubed Paneer and heat through. Stir in some chopped coriander.

thanks for those ideas I like the sound of both of them. How much paneer per head? I managed to get some in Adsa Smile

I tend to cube the paneer and fry it with cumin seeds, a bit of turmeric, a bit of ginger and some chilli flakes, then add to a veggie curry to warm through.

Nigella's recipe for mattar paneer is pretty good though I tend to deviate from it a lot (more spices, less tomato etc).

CuriousMama · 13/04/2012 21:38

Cheers for that I'll google Nigella's recipe.

I've only ever made two paneer dishes.
this one for matar paneer several times.
I 'know', the lady who owns the website, from another forum I use, she's Indian, and a real authority on Indian cooking. Her recipes work, and taste great.
And this one , which I just made last week.
You can't go wrong with spiced, deep fried, mashed potato and cheese though, right? Grin

They both sound nice. I don't have any asafoetida powder but will get some when we're next out shopping for food.

I leave it out, as I've never seen it anywhere.
Maybe I could get some online?

CuriousMama · 14/04/2012 14:45

Tesco have it apparently? There's some good asian food shops in my old town am visiting soon so will pop in and get some.

Looks a nice online shop? May be more expensive than the Tesco one though?

asafoetida can be left out of curries, however do you have an Indian grocers near you? I really recommend them - the ingredients are brilliant from there, and you won't get any fresher garlic, onions, chillis and herbs. Puts the supermarkets to shame. Plus they are incredibly cheap. I am lucky in that I live in an ethnic area so there are loads of asian grocers nearby.

netto that site you have linked to looks great, I have just spent ages trawling through. Really well written and I am going to cook the afghani curry from there tonight. Thanks for that!

I cook curry a lot, this is my bible www.amazon.co.uk/Great-Curries-India-Camellia-Panjabi/dp/1856265463/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1334413349&sr=8-1 - written by a woman who was involved with the Bombay Brasserie iirc.

No Indian shops here at all.
I'll try Tesco online, as the one here is tiny.

Her site is great, she has one of her sauces on the menu at Leon.
Her daughter has a fantastic blog too.
