It's good for you, ok, but it's got to be swallowed first. As confirmed today again at lunchtime, my 16m old hates it. I served it very plain, with mashed potatoes. My plan is to introduce it gradually by hiding it. Any good recipes/ideas out there ?

Is cod an oily fish? We have fish pie which is cod steaks in a homemade cheese sauce with alsorts of other veggies, like carrots, broccoli, sweetcorn, spinach, peas and cauliflower with mash ontop. My DS (4) who doesn't like fish eats this as I tell him it's cheesy veg pie!

No, cod's not an oily fish ... list of oily fish here

Which did you try? Fish has quite a strong flavour that he might refuse now but get a taste for later.

My dd loved salmon fish cakes at that age - has to be made with fresh fish to get the omega oils though, not tinned.

kedgeree or a version of - boiled rice with curry/turmeric powder, cooked peas, chopped hard boiled egg and flaked smoked fish.

If he'll eat pasta bake you can disguise the fish in with the pasta.

I shove it in a fish pie - mackerel and salmon - make it with a creamy sauce (I normally use creme fraiche), lots of mash on top and through in some sort of herb in with the fish (I sometimes use chives because they are quite strong).

She's fine with cod. She eats it with spuds and lots of dill and cheese. No prob with that. It's salmon and trout that she loathes the sight of. Can I steal your fish cake recipe WWW ?

Makes 8 large fishcakes

15oz salmon steaks (or whatever fish you prefer)
10oz potatoes, peeled
2 teaspoons chopped parsley
2 level tablespoons natural yoghurt
1 beaten egg
1 medium carrot, grated
1 onion, peeled and chopped
2oz fine wholemeal breadcrumbs
1.5 tablespoons vegetable oil

Boil the potatoes for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile grill or poach the salmon.

When the fish is cooked, flake the flesh with a fork. Mash the potatoes without milk or fat. Turn them into a bowl and add the salmon, parsley, yoghurt, egg, carrot and onion. Divide the mixture into 8 (or more, if you want to make smaller ones) and shape each piece into a flat cake.

Spread the breadcrumbs onto a plate and put two or three cakes at a time on it. Use a knife or spoon to gently press crumbs into the top and sides of the cakes.

Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan and fry the fish cakes over a moderate heat for three minutes each side until golden brown.
