What natural process is babyrice meant to replicate?

I don't understand it at all. Isn't it more logical just to give baby sucks of mushed up food from your plate?

What other cultures have special weaning food?

Constipation.

No, really - babyrice on its own constpated both of mine. I started them off with sweet potato and carrot. (Tho' dd's first food was in fact a piece of blueberry muffin that fell into her mouth when she unlatched while I was having a mid-breastfeed snack! )

I have no idea, I've never done it. I used fruit or veg to start with. I thought baby rice was a too dull an introdution to food.

I use babyrice when I'm lazy and want to fill him up. I add it to fruit or veg. I think it's probably pretty pointless nutritionally as it's white rice.

I've done baby led weaning with my ds4 who's 12 months. In some ways it was great but you don't get much down them and it's very, very, very messy. I also find that, if I really want to feed him up, he won't let me because he wants to be in charge of everything that goes in his mouth as this is what he's used to. It can be annoying (my dh has been very resistant) but he now feeds himself with a spoon at 12 months.

Well I actually like it. But then I like semolina and tapioca and rice pudding and porridge but NOT ready brek . It goes very nicely with stewed apples and pears yummy. Its just flaked rice anyway isnt it? and you can buy them in the non baby section if you like.

NotQuiteCockney · 07/02/2006 10:02

oops, gagging isn't the same as choking. It is very nervous-making, I know, but gagging is just a reflex, trying to get food out of a weird place. It sorts itself out. Choking is all about inability to breathe, and is a real problem.

I understand, about struggling with a worried dh, mine was twitchy about baby-led weaning with DS2 (we did 16 weeks, puree etc etc with DS1), but now is a very big fan. And DS2 uses a spoon very well, and has been from about a year.

It just seems a bit odd.

How do other (non-baby-rice!) cultures start weaning?

(My dd sucked some potato off my finger yesterday

Then threw up

So I figure, nah way too early)

I think the whole grain thing as a first food is a bad idea. I plan to start on pureed veg this time again. I only puree it because I don't want to chew it for her!

If she is anything like her big bother it will be the only time I can get vegetables into her so I had better make the most of it.

mummygow · 07/02/2006 10:08

prettycandles - lol

just started weaning myself and pureeing fruit and veg - do you think I should just forget the babyrice (been mixing it with apple)

CatBert · 07/02/2006 10:14

I think it's probably because baby rice actually does have a few more calories than plain pureed veg. Also it isn't introducing a new taste - just texture.

Pear is a good one to start with because it's completely non allergenic. Apprently. Mushes really easily and is sweet, but not overpowering.

Avacado is apparently good too. Very soft, AND has lots of goodness. Nasty colour though when they inevitably go "Yuech" and spit it out!
