Rainbow Cake

Pics on my profile

This gave me the idea no unicorns involved

I used a basic madeira recipe because I felt a vicki sponge might be a bit delicate, and madeira is quite robust:
8oz/225g plain flour
1 tsp baking powder
8oz/225g butter or margarine, at room temperature (I?ve always used butter!)
8oz/225g caster sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
4 eggs

Divvied the batter into seven, 200g,next one 180g, next one 160g etc. I used cereal bowls for the larger amounts and then those ikea plastic bowls as the volumes decreased. Colour each bowlful of batter with paste colour, then follow the technique for unicorn rainbow cake.

Bake until blade comes out clean (mine was I think 50 mins at 160 degrees)

Delicious

I covered my cake with ready roll icing, secured with quince paste [ponce] instead of apricot jam, then it looked a plain cake, til cut with a TA-DAH stylee flourish

That looks amazing!

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 08/04/2012 08:26

What's paste coloyr? I've never heard of that!

SpaghettiTwirlerAndProud · 08/04/2012 08:26

*paste colour

That is fantastic! Cake envy here.

Catsmamma · 08/04/2012 08:42

did it make a difference to use the different weights of mix??....in the link she just made seven colours, dividing the cake mix evenly

ApplesinmyPocket · 08/04/2012 08:49

That is so beautiful, DeepThought. Brilliant! I'd love to have a go.

DeepThought · 08/04/2012 17:04

hmmm Catsmama, I would use a logarithm rather than a straight divi as in the link or straight numerical reduction that I did, if I was going to make another, as there really wasn't enough red and too much violet. But only if you were being picky. The cake tasted marv and looked aMAYzing

Paste colours are very concentrated, a bit spenny ££ but you need a teeny dab, literally the tip of a cocktail stick

this kinda thing

That cake is fab.
I'm going to try it for dd 5th birthday next month. She has asked for a two tier cake with pink, green and yellow colours.

signet2012 · 10/04/2012 18:45

I use 100's and thousands in the mix and they melt in the oven giving it a multi coloured cake. Wondered how they did it properly!!!

BlackAffronted · 11/04/2012 08:47

I don't even bake cakes, but this looks so marvellous that dd and I are making it as soon as the food colours are delivered!

bettykelly123 · 02/05/2012 21:40

can i crash please...... this is such an amazing idea. i want to try it for dd 3rd birthday cake. but i need some help. i have an 8inch square tin and this week i made a cake for other dd's birthday cake and i followed a recipe by the book but i was disappointed with the depth of the cake. so can anyone tell me what recipe they would use for this type of cake for an 8inch square tin?
thank you xxx

Try using this converter www.cakebaker.co.uk/baking-tin-size-conversion-calculator.html to adjust the recipe you have already :)

TitsalinaBumSquash · 03/05/2012 07:57

I made one of these for DP's birthday last week! It was a real hit. Smile

babysbreath · 20/05/2012 20:11

This may be a really thick question!

If you are only using six food colourings, why do you need seven bowls? Is the seventh one the cake tin?
