Is it necessary to add vinegar to colour Easter eggs?

Because I just got home from the shop and realized I've forgotten the bloody vinegar. Really don't feel like going out again. It's water, vinegar and food coluring, right? What would happen if I didn't use vinegar? Promised DD we will do it in the afternoon.

Hey there Winny; from what I can see on-line it doesn't seem to be; I think most people use vinegar for hard boiling eggs to stop them from leaking if they crack when cooking; just boil them from room temperate starting with cold water this site had some cool ideas that I looked at :)

have fun [busmile] xx

I've never managed to get this to work. Is it because we have brown eggs?

Thanks.

It seesm that vinegar helps the dye penetrate the shell better and so results in more vivid colours.
