Kids with huge appetite - ideas for snacks?

Both my kids have a huge appetite, they usually eat everything at lunch and tea (sometimes have seconds), but in the evenings they are always usually hungry again 2 hours later, no matter how late dinner is.

I am tired of them nagging for crisps, biscuits, jam on toast etc, they go through a huge amount of bread, and now its the Easter hols and are home all day its costing me a fortune.

Going on a food shop tomorrow, any ideas for cheap, but nutritious snacks I can stock up
on?

Stay off the carbs and go high protein, so nuts, seeds, muesli bars (without too much sugar etc.), boiled eggs (for savoury).

Protein will leave them feeling fuller for much longer - carbs disappear too quickly and leave them hungry earlier.

Mine go through loads of bowls of natural yogurt, sometimes with fruit, fruit purée or honey, often plain, boxes of weetabix and shredded wheat & toast, buns, scones and malt loaf. DS is extremely active and rarely stops eating.

I will watch with interest.

My DS1 is 8 and currently eats more than me or DH. Shock Hmm

I think he has hollow legs. Grin

But it is costing me a fortune!

If they must have toast, put a nut butter on it. Personally I consider peanut butter to be Devil's diarrhoea, but some people like it - or there are other nut butters to consider (almond, cashew, probably hazelnut - in fact, Nutella is probably better than jam)

Home made flapjacks (oats, marg, sugar, syrup + nuts/fruit if they like) are cheap, filling and a better carb source than wheat.

Fruit smoothies (made with banana or frozen berries) with half milk half water plus fruit. Very filling, nutritious and fairly cheap.

Spanish omelette (potatoes + egg) with fillings (onion/pepper/corn/peas) they like. Cut in wedges and store in fridge for a quick snack

Popcorn - without salt or sugar. Cheap and moreish. Small cobettes of corn nice hot or cold.
Pitta bread and dips ; peanut butter with carrot sticks.

Would give high fat, high protein food to fill them up. Carbs, just make you want to eat more carbs.
