Nut Free Foods/Nut Warnings/Tips/Advice

It would be great to get tips and hints on foods from mums of other nut allergic children on this thread. Bearing in mind recipes change all the time, can you recommend snacks/foods that are nut-free at the time of writing?

I don't have any food suggestions yet as I haven't been shopping since our peanut episode but I have been lucky enough to speak to someone who has a nut allergic child who passed on these words of wisdom to me:

The nut warning may lurk under the 'fold' in the wrapper, situtated no where near the ingredients list.

Multipacks of things like crisps may not carry a nut warning on the outer wrapper but some of the items inside may carry a warning.

When going to a birthday party don't be afraid to ask the party-goers parent to keep the food-wrappers so you can check them out and see what is safe and what isnt.

Request your nursery or school sends a letter home to parents asking them to avoid peanut butter and snacks in packed lunches. They may not agree but it is worth asking.

When eating out, ask what oil is used, groundnut oil is no good.

Sainsburys produce seasonal lists that carry nut-free products.

I hope some of the more experienced mums can add to this thread and help us newly diagnosed mums.

Thanks so much in advance!

I have a dd with a severe nut allergy and was told just recently that all "Somerfield" own products are produced right next to a nut factory. Don't know how true it is or whether it is relevant really but might be worth knowing.

DS loves cheerios and mini weetabix but we can't have these now as they have nut warnings on the packaging. Just wondering if anyone can recommend a similar nut-free breakfast cereal?
Thanks!

Just found out that Abidec vitamins for Babies and Children have peanut oil in them.

I can second the Safeway Malt Bites - they go down so well for my peanut-allergic dd. And you can use them to make chocolate snacks with - you know, those kind of store-cupboard ones that you can get little children to help with.

This probably is not very helpful as I can't get this product in Ireland, but perhaps you can get it in the UK or at least your local health food store might order it... we love SoyNut Butter, it is low fat, high in soy protein, and my 1 year old loves the taste, great for sandwiches. It's an American product and I manage to beg any friend going overseas to bring me back jars of it!
