Convince to buy meat from my local butcher rather than from my local supermarket - I can't get beyond the price difference!

I have a very nice butcher/deli in the next town to me. It is run by some very friendly helpful butchers but it is on the pricey side. I also have the usual selection of well known supermarkets who sell significantly cheaper meat especially when part of their many deals.

I know the quality will be better at the butchers but as a family of 5 can I afford it? Smile

if it is a crap overpriced butcher give it a wide berth though. closer to us we have a really crap v expensive butcher that makes supermarket meat look like manna.

The taste is so much better.

You use smaller amounts.

And ours have standard big buys of steak mince, chicken breasts or thighs, chops etc. the legs are so ing that a slow roasted one, pulled apart is plenty in a stew for us both.

I have found that using our village butcher has worked out cheaper than supermarkets Tbh.

He does a weekly meat pack - pound of Bacon, pound of sausages, pound of mince, pound of stewing steak (or 2 pork chops) and 2 big chicken breasts - for a tenner!

I also like the fact you can tailor the joint size to how much I actually want or can afford rather than being dictated to. Although the lamb is expensive but he says its because its expensive to buy in and it doesn't make much profit. And the cooked ham is sooooo much nicer than pre packed stuff.

My biggest gripe with supermarkets though is that its really hard to know where the meat had come from - a lot of it seems to be imported but processed here whereas our butcher uses all local producers

learning my grandparents live in France (they're British but have been there for 30/40 years so fully French in their habits) and the local butcher there provides them with a photo of him with the cow that you are about to purchase and tells them all about it.

My mum took her to Morrisons and she quizzed the guy at the butcher's counter about the meat. He said he didn't know and would go and find out and eventually just brought her a plastic wrapper with a sticker on (which is how the joint had arrived at the shop). She was very unimpresesd.

Ha ha that's brilliant! Picture of a cow! I'll suggest it to ours this week!

I watched a program about pig farming a few years back along the lines of Hugh F-Ws chicken and fish programmes and it totally put me off imported meat and processed foods (guess the aim was achieved!) And I kind of think if I don't use our local shops they will close.

I have never tasted a difference between anything got from our butcher or the supermarket. Price difference is ridiculous though.

Recently bought some meat at Costco though and that was lovely so sticking with that for now

my local butcher is a bit duff TBH, ditto the greengrocer.

the market a few miles away is the business though
they do £10 mixed bags, which keep up going for ages. i think the last one i bought had 3 rib eye steaks, 3 sirloin steaks, 4 pork steaks, 2 gammon steaks, and a tray of chicken thighs. admittedly the steaks are thinly cut, but it's still a great deal. the meat is as nice as the supermarket stuff, and we menu plan around it when we get home.

It could just be a pricey butcher, some are cheaper than others ime.

Ours is pricey but uses locally reared meat and has it's own slaughterhouse so the animals arent in the trucks for too long prior to slaughter. Live animal transportation really bothers me.
