If you had to feed your child a very quick meal...

would you consider chicken nuggets (best quality Wink ) an apple and wholemeal toast reasonably healthy?

DS2 goes to a club on Friday eves. I only have about 30 mins between getting home from school and leaving for club. He gets fed "tea" at the club, but that's usually crumpets & jam or fruit and a cake etc which isn't really an adequate dinner, but means he's not hungry for a proper dinner when he gets home iyswim. I'm doing my best, but should I do better?

Beans on toast Grin

lifesrichpageant · 30/03/2012 17:28

In my house, a resounding YES.

lifesrichpageant · 30/03/2012 17:29

YES meaning, "yes, it's healthy", not "yes, you should do better"

Chicken + wholemeal toast + an apple sounds really good to me, and not just on a busy night, either.

microwaved jacket potato, cheese and beans?

Abra1d · 30/03/2012 17:30

Absolutely fine.

HarrietSchulenberg · 30/03/2012 17:31

Yup, fine, assuming nuggets aren't the greasy beaks-n-claws ones. Beans on toast plus fruit is another speedy one round here.

NettoSuperstar · 30/03/2012 17:32

Sounds fine, though I'd do pasta, pesto, peas, or something I'd cooked and frozen, or cheese/scrambled egg on toast.

AdornMeWithSparkle · 30/03/2012 17:34

Sounds fine.

Scrambled egg is also quick and nutritious (with the apple and toast too)

Cereal at a pinch!

My two have a proper lunch at nursery and it's hard to get them to eat anything in the evening when we're home so it's apples, yoghurts, toast and other easy things for them!

thisisyesterday · 30/03/2012 17:34

why not just let him have a small portion of whatever the rest of you have had when he gets back?

saves you the hassle of having to do another meal, he'll get fed at club so won't be ravenous and you can just save him a little bit back?

not that I have any problem with nuggets, apple and toast, just thinking it would be easier for you!

people · 30/03/2012 17:41

Thank's all. Yes, I should have mentioned he's a difficult to feed. No beans, dairy or egg, all the things I would give the rest of us for a quick meal. And yes, I know I should let him go without if he won't eat what's in front of it, but he's quite happy to. Not really into food at all, which is why giving him a small portion when he gets home won't work. Unless it's his absolute favourite (or sweets), or he's ravenous, he'll just decide to go without.

Don't worry. One meal is neither here nor there and there are few 'good' or 'bad' choices. As long as, over the course of the week as a whole, he gets a reasonable variety of foods and as long as you encourage him to try new foods as well, he'll be fine.

CherryBlossom27 · 31/03/2012 10:32

I think it's fine on the odd occasion. Maybe next time you cook something like chilli or cottage pie, freeze a portion and then you can you it when you haven't got time to cook a proper meal.

CherryBlossom27 · 31/03/2012 10:33

Jacket potato is a good one, you can bake the potato in the oven the day before and zap it in the microwave the next day to serve and put it with whatever you son likes

cece · 31/03/2012 10:35

Omlette

SaraBellumHertz · 31/03/2012 10:36

Pasta - throw on some frozen peas and sweetcorn then when cooked stir in some olive oil or a dollop of butter and grate cheese. Nice bread and salad to go alongside. Yum. DS would eat plain pasta if allowed.

msbuggywinkle · 01/04/2012 13:22

Sounds fine to me! I do stir fry and noodles usually.

Eclairwaldorf · 01/04/2012 13:24

Scrambled eggs with baked beans mixed is in is a favourite here, or eggy bread when short on time.

Sirzy · 01/04/2012 13:26

Sounds fine. I just wish Ds woul eat things like nuggets occasionally!

StarlightDicKenzie · 01/04/2012 13:26

Rice pudding, out the tin with a spoon.
