Can anyone recommend a good slow cooker recipe book?

We have got one but the recipes are quite elaborate for every day meals.

I've found this one. Does anyone have it?

Would prefer to get one that someone's tried and tested.

Also I am cooking chicken quarters for tonight in cajun sauce. The recipe says to cook on low for 3-4 hours. Will that be enough to cook them through?

hi I have this book www.amazon.co.uk/Antonys-Slow-Cooking-Recipes-Cooker/dp/1845334914/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1332868173&sr=8-1 but haven't really used it - so far I've just gone with tips and recipes from mumsnet and also netmums. I think the AWT book would be taking things up a notch and I'm not ready for that yet! Maybe consider borrowing some from the library first I know ours has a good selection pretty much like the one you linked to..

OneLittleBabyTerror · 28/03/2012 10:00

Have you tried the A Year of Slow Cooking blog?

NettoSuperstar · 28/03/2012 10:33

I love that blog, the felafels are my favourite recipe ever.
I also have the AWT book, but haven't cooked anything from it, not for any particularly reason, too many books, too little time.
I have all our meals planned for this week/next week, but I'll find something from it to cook the week after.

Thanks for the blog link, looks great!

Cinnamonthecat · 29/03/2012 09:28

that blog link looks great! netto could you report back on which one you try? I'll choose one too in the meantime and let you know..

NettoSuperstar · 29/03/2012 15:19

I've chosen the Morrocan spiced roast chicken, but I'm going to adapt it to use a cheap turkey leg I stole just like AWT haha bought in Morrison's yesterday and of course it'll go in the SC, rather than being roasted.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Cinnamonthecat · 01/04/2012 21:22

thanks will be interested to hear how it goes. Due a large supermarket shop Weds so will chose one before that and to the same oh haha just read your struck out comment Aaw bless I've always had a bit of a soft spot for him :)

Cinnamonthecat · 04/04/2012 12:11

I've chosen to do the Aromatic chicken with oranges - What is manzanilla sherry though ? any suggestions for a substitute not sure I want to fork out for it (only need 180 mls) and now I think of it that's why I've not done any of his recipes I hate having to especially but things for one recipe that then lurk in the back of the cupboard!

NettoSuperstar · 04/04/2012 12:19

No idea, I have a bottle of Fino sherry for cooking.
I bought that for a Nigella, and haven't used it since!
It's probably off by now.

Cinnamonthecat · 04/04/2012 15:33

Thanks Netto. Just back from Aldi and have everything bar the sherry will go to local off licence and buy cheapest sherry I can find. It just occurred, I could drink the rest if the recipe doesn't work out :) Will either make it tomorrow or Saturday and report back (quite excited now, def wouldn't have bothered trying it only for this thread)

NettoSuperstar · 04/04/2012 16:27

Drink it first, then the food will taste great anyway!

NettoSuperstar · 07/04/2012 11:53

Well I made it last night.
I left out the yoghurt as I thought that would curdle in the sc, but other than that, pretty much followed it with the turkey leg.
It smelled delicious cooking all day, and was really tasty. We had it with some home made rolls to dip in the juices and some salad leaves from a bag.
I'd recommend it.

Cinnamonthecat · 08/04/2012 14:07

sounds good Netto I will try it I need to get a couple of the spices first though. I did Aromatic chicken with oranges yesterday. It was easy to prepare and the next time will be even easier as I wouldn't bother too much with the faffing about at the end I'd remove the orange and lemon skins entirely at the point where you take the chicken out, then I'd leave the chicken in an zap on high for 20 mins-I didn't like the orange skins in the finished dish. Served it with cous cous which took up the juices nicely. It was lovely another recommendation from the book from here. I had a glass of the sherry later and enjoyed that too [buwink] (went for Harveys bristol cream in the end)

NettoSuperstar · 08/04/2012 16:54

Thanks, I'll try it.
Will update this thread next time I try another dish from the book too [busmile]

Cinnamonthecat · 09/04/2012 09:41

lovely yes I'll do that too

Housemum · 11/04/2012 19:34

Am I just doing something wrong, or does anyone else find that stuff done in the slow cooker has a weird taste/texture? I love casseroles, but have tried a few beef casseroles and the veg always seem to have an odd taste

NettoSuperstar · 12/04/2012 11:08

I find it fine.
What sort of odd taste?

Housemum · 17/04/2012 13:58

Not sure - kind of mushy and musty? Standard slow cooker, ceramic pot and glass lid. I brown off the beef in a frying pan, then put it in the pot with veg and stock, cook on medium for about 4-5 hours I think. (Would need to check the book but sending this from phone)

BlackAffronted · 17/04/2012 14:20

Try adding a spoonful of branston pickle/caramlised onion marmalade or chutney to add a nice savoury flavour to beef casserole done in the SC. Or a piece of star anise, really brings out the beef flavour, Heston told me so Grin

NettoSuperstar · 17/04/2012 16:13

I'm making Delia's braised steak au poivre, with red wine in my sc tomorrow.
DD hates the taste of star anise though, so won't try that!
I love my sc, don't think I've had a failure in it, but will remember the onion marmalade tip. I usually have a jar lurking.
In fact, I keep meaning to make it, also in the sc!
