Homemade lentil soup left out overnight uncovered - would you eat it?

That's it really

Made a lentil soup last night out of lentils, stock, passata and veg. Had a large bowlful left over, so I put it on the kitchen table uncovered to cool down. The plan was to cover it and put it in the fridge when it had cooled down, but I fell asleep and forgot. DH put it into the fridge this morning.

Really don't want to throw decent food away, but not sure if it's a bit too risky to eat it? What do you reckon?

Eat it.

nickelhasababy · 21/03/2012 12:47

yes, eat it.
it's fine.

AliceHurled · 21/03/2012 12:48

I leave lentil soup out for way longer than that and eat it frequently

CharlotteBronteSaurus · 21/03/2012 12:49

we always eat leftovers that have been cooled in the kitchen and not returned to the fridge.

GrimmaTheNome · 21/03/2012 12:49

I'd heat it to boiling for a bit longer than usual and eat it. Probably wouldn't if it had been a soup with meat in - but then, if it was meaty the dog could have it.

MrsTractor · 21/03/2012 12:49

Yes, it will be absolutely fine, I leave soup out for a couple of days and it's still perfectly edible. Don't let good food go to waste! I'll eat it if you're not sure! Grin

worldgonecrazy · 21/03/2012 12:50

Eat it, presuming you are going to reheat and boil for at least 5 minutes.

GrimmaTheNome · 21/03/2012 12:51

Put a plate on top of the bowl next time. Wont slow the heating too much and will stop anything getting into it - later in the year there may be flies, I wouldn't want anything a fly had swum in!
Or get one of those net umbrella things.

realhousewifeofdevoncounty · 21/03/2012 12:54

Eat it! I do this all the time. Blush I kind of assume that because I'm veggie, I'm immune to food poisoning, but of course this is probably ridiculous! Grin

JuliaScurr · 21/03/2012 12:55

Grimma if it had meat in it, our cat would have already had it - including flies
I reckon eat it

Servalan · 21/03/2012 13:16

Ah - well that's fairly universal - thanks - it was the leaving it uncovered bit I was most concerned about, but will make sure it's piping hot!

Cheers folks

100 % wrong, please google the topic! You're not adviced to let lentils sit out (and the same goes for pasta, rice etc.). It does not help to cook cook food that is already toxic.

madeleif · 29/12/2022 17:12

In the same way, if you leave pasta/rice on the kitchen counter, the bacteria Bacillus cereus can produce toxins.

I see OP is still posting 10 years later, so she survived.
