I've gone right off bread, so I'm looking for some alternatives, including things I can take to work.

I love rice and pasta, so anything on those lines would be great. No seafood though. Yuk.

Couscous? I often eat that with chopped cherry tomatoes, spring onions, feta cheese etc

fuckityfuckfuckfuck · 18/03/2012 21:24

Couscous. I always thought it was quite wanky til I realised how easy and yum it was. Takes all of about 2 minutes to prepare. I make it while I'm in the kitchen at night, leave it to cool, refrigerate and add some chopped veggies in the morning when I want to eat it.

soup - any veg soup works
pasta salad
salad based on butternut squash, with spring onions, balsamic dressing and sundried tomatoes
crackers, cheese slices, turkey or ham slices and apple

Ainsley Harriott instant soup - specifically, the Thai Chicken one. The only instant soup I have ever been able to stand - it's lovely.

Leftovers - pretty well anything can be put in a pot and taken with you. Soup can be good, in a flask if you don't have heating facilities at work, and is cheap and easy to make.

Greek Salad
Cold pasta pesto
Cajun chicken, green olives and salad

I make pastry-less quiche. Whisk 4 eggs with a tub of Quark (low fat soft cheese), fry up some veggies or ham and things, add to egg mix. Grate in some cheese, I also crumble in an Oxo Spag Bol cube but you can add herbs/ paprika or something; pour into baking dish and bake on 180 fan oven for 30mins, check with skewer to see if it's all set. It's tasty cold for lunch!

Oo great ideas! Not sure about the couscous, it looks too grainy, but I might try it. Thanks.

bulgar wheat is nice instead of cous cous. DD takes it to school with some cooked chicken and salad, makes me feel like a proper mum haha

Oatcakes and houmous. Leftover pasta stuff. Left over anything hot actually (presuming you have a microwave to heat up in?). Soup etc. Ryvitas and cheese. Wraps with any filling.

I can't eat bread so I use all of the above regularly.

calzones, quick, simple, cheap and you can put anything you like in them

I made bentos, and mainly revolves around rice and left over dinners or freezer stash. I have cooked a lot of the recipes in justbento.com for my lunches. I don't like sandwiches much, and also want something fairly substantial and hot for my lunch.

Chickpeas and fried chorizo mixed with cherry tomatoes, sliced red onion, flat leaf parsley, sherry vinegar dressing

Salade nicoise: tuna (in olive oil), hard boiled egg, lettuce, tomato, red onion, little boiled potatoes, black olives

Tuna (in olive oil) mixed with white beans and minced red onion, with parsley

Spinach, bacon and avocado salad with tomatoes, red onion and cheddar

Cold roast chicken and potatoes with salsa verde (parsley, mint, lemon juice, Dijon mustard, capers, anchovies, blended into a sauce). Lentils are nice with it too.

Smoked mackerel salad, made with spinach, unvinegared beetroot, steamed and blanched broccoli, tomatoes, spring onions and horseradish dressing.

Frittata: veg, cheese and egg. I like broccoli, peas and feta.

Quiche.

Smoked fish pate with crudités and crackers (whizz fish, lemon juice, black pepper, cream cheese - delicious)
