Five a day

I also posted this in Children's Health but perhaps it should be here instead?

Does anyone know how much fruit/veg is classed as a 'portion'?

Are adults portions the same as kids, or is a kids portion less?

I remember reading somewhere once that a typical 'portion' is roughly the amount you (or a child) can hold in their hand. Anyone know if this is correct?

For example, DS (6) had about 5 grapes - would you say that counts as one of his five a day?

Thanks!

yes a portion is the amount they could hold in the palm of their hand so a childs portion would be smaller than an adult one. No, 5 grapes would not be a full portion but could be counted towards a portion

Poptart IMO and E There is a little known secret to the eating of fruit (so you get the full vitamin content) it is to eat it when hungry. Bananas and some starchy fruit is okay after a meal but a decent interval between the end of a meal and the eating of fruit is beneficial to everyone's digestion and therefore health.

I have always taken a portion size to be similar to that of a piece of string.

But 5 grapes is roughly the amount DS could hold in the palm of his hand Seona. He is 6 and the grapes were quite big, so I'll count it as a portion :)
Thanks!

Ah well, if the grapes are big and his hand is small then that's fine Smile
