Does coconut oil 'tone down' a medium curry?

... and if not, what will?

do you mean coconut milk?

MrsArchieTheInventor · 14/03/2012 16:14

Sorry, coconut milk, not oil! Blush

try sugar. Just be careful how much you put in.

Try a teaspoon or two and then add until you are happy.

I have used it and it worked a treat.

MrsArchieTheInventor · 14/03/2012 16:28

Thank you! Smile

Didn't want to ruin a perfectly good curry by pouring the stuff in if it didn't need it. To be honest it's for the kids as their tongues aren't as palatable to spice as ours, but thanks for the advice! Smile

coconut milk is fine. or you could thin down some natural yoghurt and add that to the curry

Chopstheduck · 14/03/2012 16:34

I'd use yoghurt. I even dollop on a big spoonful on top when I dish up the kids if I've made something really spicy.

Chopstheduck · 14/03/2012 16:35

I use sugar too sometimes. Then lemon to counteract the sweetness.

MrsArchieTheInventor · 14/03/2012 16:35

Does it have to be plain yogurt or will vanilla do?

Chop & fry a small onion add it to the curry it will tone down spiciness. Also works if you put too much salt in a curry.

MrsArchieTheInventor · 14/03/2012 16:40

It's a slow cooked chicken curry, can't add the onion now, though will save that tip for future reference! Smile

Haven't tried it but I think vanilla should do as well!

a peeled potato possibly or the coconut milk.

try a peeled potato vouched by DH who came in carrying dry washing off the line.

Coconut milk, yogurt and sugar all help. Sweeteness always takes the edge off the heat, which is why I usually order a coke when I have a curry. It works much better than water which just spreads the heat round your mouth.

NettoSuperstar · 14/03/2012 17:15

I think the fizz makes it worse.
I use a mouthful of plain rice to stifle the heat, a tip I learned in Indonesia.
I know drinking milk works, but I have IBS and drinking milk ends up rather explosively!

Bunbaker · 14/03/2012 18:46

I don't have a problem with the fizz. I just find that anything sweet helps tone down a hot dish for me. Also, most places only have coke on a pump and it isn't very fizzy.

NettoSuperstar · 14/03/2012 19:47

TBF, I've never tried sweet stuff to tone down a hot dish, and given I rarely eat out, it's usually my fault for over hotting it!
I generally serve it in very small amounts, with plenty of plain rice and other dishes.
I usually make a few curries as a meal, adding salads/relishes.

I really can't drink anything from those pub post mixes though, they all taste vaguely like mildly carbonated dishwater.
On the rare occasions I'm in a pub, I choose bottled alcohol, or water.

Ultrasonic · 14/03/2012 19:49

A spoonfull of Peanut butter works a treat too

Beanbagz · 15/03/2012 11:15

My dad (born in India) swears by natural yoghurt. I generally just tell the kids to stop complaining and eat up (or get them to stir the curry into the rice).

DonInKillerHeels · 15/03/2012 11:22

Yoghurt (old india hand trick). And a sugary drink or sugary pudding afterwards also helps to kill the heat.

TheProvincialLady · 15/03/2012 11:29
  1. Coconut milk
  2. Creamed coconut (better if your sauce is already runny)
  3. Yoghurt but wait until cooled slightly and then don't reheat or it may well curdle
  4. Cream - ditto unless double
  5. Plain rice, breads, mango chutneys, yoghurt etc to eat with the curry
  6. A tin of chopped tomatoes heated through and added will also help

I have never found that just adding sweetness helps with the heat. Southern Indian food is very sweet but also very very hot.
