Is it supposed to taste of something?

Nope. It just looks pretty Wink

frazzlerock · 13/03/2012 12:39

Well that was £1.75 I'll never get back.
I thought my taste buds had broken.

Dragon Fruit, if eaten freshly picked (i.e. not in the UK) are fresh and sweet and taste a bit like a cross between kiwi fruit and melon.

Dragon Fruit that have been picked green, air freighted to the UK and sat on a supermarket shelf for a while taste of cotton wool.

OrmIrian · 13/03/2012 12:55

Good question.

My question would simply be 'Why?'

DS2 likes them because of their name and because they look odd. But even he struggles to say anything nice about their flavour.

And I don't much like kiwi fruit and I'm not wild about a lot melons Grin But I guess the same rule appluies - need to be eaten where they are grown. Mum used to grow lovely melons

worldgonecrazy · 13/03/2012 12:57

They are very pretty but absolutely tasteless.

Beanbagz · 13/03/2012 13:02

Soap?

No seriously they're lovely when freshly picked but not when they've been flown half way round the world.

FourThousandHoles · 13/03/2012 13:11

DD had a thing from school one half term where she had a number of challenges to complete - one of which was to try a fruit she hadn't tried before. Not trying to stealth boast or anything Grin but there aren't many easily available fruits that she hasn't tried, I love fruit so I foist it upon my children often. The dragonfruit was all we could find. What a staggering disappointment it was. I can see how they probably don't travel well, I tried a papaya and a pineapple in Thailand uears ago (more stealth boasting haha) and they were so much better than they are here.

NettoSuperstar · 13/03/2012 13:26

I buy them for DD, she likes them.
I think they're boring tastewise, but it's fruit innit!

frazzlerock · 13/03/2012 13:52

Apparently they have a huge amount of health benefits according to which is kind of why I bought it and expected it to taste like a cross between a melon and a kiwi (I adore both, even when they've been picked and flown thousands of miles!)
The texture was lovely and it was very juicy but absolutely zero flavour. Nothing.

One of the children I look after wolfed it down but my own DS and the other mindee looked at me exactly like this Hmm

I rather fancy having a go at a papaya. I'm imagining....mango?

NettoSuperstar · 13/03/2012 15:17

Papaya tastes like vomit, something to do with the enzymes in it.

NoMoreCakeOclock · 13/03/2012 15:23

I have eaten freshly picked dragon fruit in Malaysia and it tastes of... nothing. It is pretty to look at but but a total waste of time. Thai mango on the other hand is like nothing else you will ever eat. Divine.

HuevosRancheros · 13/03/2012 15:41

Papaya was disappointing for me, never had it straight from the tree, but always thought it should taste of more. Just perfumed really.

I've always found starfruit a let-down. A bit lemony, nothing else :(

frazzlerock · 13/03/2012 16:17

Better stick to the Cox Apple then!

Do I have to go to Thailand for Thai Mango? I want, I want, I want!

karmakameleon · 13/03/2012 16:23

Do not try papaya, it is the most disgusting fruit on earth! Totally grim.

The best mangoes are the Indian alphonso and kesar ones. The should come into season in April and are gorgeous but you'll probably only find them at Indian grocers shops.

Yes Huevos I agree with you re starfruit, tho I still buy them occasionally for a fresh fruit salad.
They make it look good!

lambethlil · 13/03/2012 17:46

Papaya is vomit inducing- slimy and stinky. Eugh.

snigger · 13/03/2012 17:52

This is the stage at which DH starts his seasonal eating rant, so I shall add nothing, much like dragonfruit to a fruit salad.
