King Prawns

Hi all - I looove prawns but have never cooked them - tend to buy them ready done or eat them when I'm out. However, Sainsburys were doing an offer on raw frozen king prawns so I've treated myself.

Now, what the heck do I do with them?! :D Looking for something nice and easy, and low calorie (ish) if at all possible. TIA!

piece of cake - you are in luck - you love an easy thing to cook.

  1. they go pink when cooked.
  2. pouring a kettle full of freshly boiled water over them is enough to cook them - just to give you an idea of how easy and quick it is.
  3. just rustle up your fave sauce such a sweet and sour or whatever and chuck prawns in near the end - enough time to get them hot through. Don't cook for ages as they tend to go tough.

Or just hot em up till they're pink and dip in sweet chilli sauce or satay or pop between bread and have a sarnie. Wink

Or for really low calorie just eat them plain - fresh hot prawns are quite nice undressed. :)

Or chuck em onto a pile of salad leaves and drizzle a little dressing over and tuck in. :)

Maybe sprinkle sesame seeds over if you feel like pepping it up a bit in a healthy way

A bit of sweet chilli sauce, some crispy veg - sugarsnap peas/Pak Choi/baby corn etc and some fresh noodles - a minute in the pan and a lovely lunch.

Or mix them with mayo and chuck on a jacket spud with butter and side salad.

I defrost them, then stir them into a risotto (or any other rice dish) and as soon as they go pink they are ready to eat.

Alternatively, defrost them, roll them in flour and stir-fry them, take them out, fry up your other veg, add noodles and sauce/seasonings, then stir them back in.

Warning - ever since I discovered raw prawns I haven't been able to eat the ready cooked one as I find they just don't have anything like the same flavour!

Great in fresh, tomatoey or rich, coconutty curries. Just make the sauce and add the prawns to cook in the last few minutes.

Fried up with a bit of butter and a lot of paprika and garlic

Bohica · 10/03/2012 12:21

I would make a garlic butter and then flash fry them in the butter and then eat them with my fingers

suburbophobe · 10/03/2012 12:23

Prawn curry - yum!

Cooked in butter with garlic, flambéd in Pernod. Lots of bread to mop up the juices.

MadMadamMim · 10/03/2012 18:51

Ooh thanks folks, lots of fab ideas here! I am going to try frying them in some garlic butter and have them with some stir fried veg tomorrow :D

You made a wise choice, don't forget to eat them with your fingers Grin

My favourite is sesame prawns which I normally have with rice. To make the prawns:-

  1. Peel a piece of fresh Ginger and a couple of cloves of garlic and blend to a paste in a food processor or with hand held blender.
2 chop a bunch of spring onions
  1. Toast some sesame seeds til golden in a dry frying pan and put to one side
  2. Fry Ginger paste in sesame oil in a wok for about 5 mins stirring constantly
  3. Add prawns and spring onions and stir fry til cooked (prawns turn pink about 2 mins in a hot wok)
6 add chilli if you like spicy food (I usually add about half a teaspoon of dried chilli flakes. Add about 2 tablespoons of soy sauce and almost all of the sesame seeds. Stir
  1. Serve with rice and sprinkle the remaining sesame seeds on top
