My vegan staple is veg curry, have done a lovely nut one before and curries can be done in advance.

Or you could do buffet style, with vegan dips, meze type stuff , your garlic bread and salad stuff.I take it you'd make your own garlic bread with sunflower marg or something?

Puddings are a bit tiresome too, You could go with fruit salad/piles of berries, ice cream for you and soya cream/alpro custard for vegans.

giant flat mushrooms, drizzled with olive oil, lots of herbs, garlic, wrap in foil and bake in the oven - serve in a crusty baguette like a steak sandwich.

or big pan of vegetarian chilli with jacket potatoes, or made into burritos.

Firstly - take a deep breath, it wont be as hard as you think it will. It is annoying it's such late notice, but I guess they either forgot you iddn't know or were worried about telling you... it can be difficult.

Let's start with what you are making for everyone else?

DilysPrice · 09/03/2012 19:12

How about mushroom & chestnut shepherds pie with sweet potatoes added to the mash topping to make up for the lack of butter in it.

Or a good veggie curry.

golemmings · 09/03/2012 19:13

Risotto? With parmesan on the table for non deviants?
Spaghetti bol?
Make your own pizza which is ok with a good range of veg on it without cheese

If you're doing garlic bread check the fat you're using. Sainsburys free from and pure are ok but most others contain butter milk.

Annoying when people don't tell you their diet has changed. Mind you, as a veggie with a dairy intolerant bf son (which means I can't do dairy) my mil pretty much failed to feed me with 2 weeks notice and I ate a LOT of peanut butter on toast that first visit. She's much better now and has cooked a wider range of vegan dishes in 4 months than she managed veggie meals in 13 years!

cazboldy · 09/03/2012 19:16

how about nigella's mexican lasagne but with dairy free cheese?

Is very yummy Smile

golemmings · 09/03/2012 19:16

Fajitas are good messy food for 7yos.

Also Swedish glace ice cream is surprisingly edible nice.

ThePathlessPath · 09/03/2012 19:18

fab excellent ideas - not doing separate food just all the same and everyone will eat it !

DucketyDuckDuck · 09/03/2012 19:22

eggtimer · 09/03/2012 19:23

mmmmm Mexican food,
Guacamole, refried beans, soya chilli, chilli sauce, tomato salsa, salad, tortillas, yummmmmmmmmmm

eggtimer · 09/03/2012 19:23

and sour cream for everyone else

tummytickler · 09/03/2012 19:26

How about falafal with chilli tomato sauce served on Pearl Barley risotto?
That is our vegan staple (we are veggie, but have a dairy intolerant friend who comes for supper regularly so we eat vegan food when she is here).
Also veg curries, big old bowl of vegetable soup and bread?

MrsTittleMouse · 09/03/2012 19:28

Ethnic is always good.
If you're feeling very stressed, then go to the supermarket and pick up some felafel, hummus and pitta (check labels for vegan-friendliness obviously). You can then add olives/jars of peppers etc. and a salad and it will be lovely and, best of all, no cooking and lots of time chatting with friends. :)

PointTheFinger · 09/03/2012 19:32

my vegan friend loved this (a fairly regular one for us when we want to be healthy!)

harissa beans with roasted tomatoes and wilted spinach

just don't give the kids any spinach!

PointTheFinger · 09/03/2012 19:33

ps watch out for pasta and noodles as a lot contain eggs!

spendthrift · 09/03/2012 19:50

Mediterranean food. Stuffed tomatoes or aubergine, hummus, salads, veg stew with saffron and tomatoes, tabbouleh and couscous as well as falafel as mentioned above.
Then blackberry and Apple with Swedish place, we too got used to it. Or if you have time an exotic fruit granita.
Also potato waffles as from Iceland. Our vegan friends swore by them for kids.

mrspink27 · 09/03/2012 19:53

There is a fab recipe for choc cake which is vegan - you could serve this with berries? And everyone else could have it with cream/ice cream/creme fraiche etc.

Would you like the recipe?
