Would you let your 5 year old DC go to school without having had a substantial breakfast?

DS is 5.8 He leaves for school at 8:15 and morning break is 10:45 to 11.

For breakfast he ate 5 grapes, 1 strawberry and 2 blueberries.

I'm sure he will make up for it the rest of the day. DD is not a big breakfast fan so will often just have a few mouthfuls and then not want the rest.

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2012 09:10

Mine are 9 and 12. Neither of them breakfast fans. DS1 so anxious about school at the moment he has nothing Sad. DS2 had two grapes and an apple. You can't force them, don't worry.
Ideally for me they would be having cereal and toast but we don't live in an ideal world. Sad

My DS is not a big fan of breakfast. I just make dure he has a good snack for breaktime.

TheFoosa · 09/03/2012 09:17

I wouldn't but only because they are not allowed snacks at breaktime at our stupid school

DilysPrice · 09/03/2012 09:20

As a one off, yes, he won't starve. I'd place a piece of toast in front of him probably though.

fluffyanimal · 09/03/2012 09:22

Some days DS just wants a yogurt. Some days he wants bacon and eggs. I don't stress, because there is always fresh fruit or veg to snack on in the classroom at my son's school.

BrigitBigKnickers · 09/03/2012 09:23

My DDs are quite keen on the little Brioche rolls- you can get them individually packed so can be eaten on the move- perhaps not the most nutritious but at least they would have some carbs inside them to keep them going.

Sparklingbrook · 09/03/2012 09:23

My two eat a huge breakfast at the weekend but about 9am, I think it's the earliness that doesn't help. I'm not mad keen on breakfast super early.

NettoSuperstar · 09/03/2012 09:24

DD, 10, isn't much of a breakfast eater on schooldays either.
I just leave her to it really, so long as she's eating well overall.
Besides, I never eat breakfast and manage OK.

annalovesmrbates · 09/03/2012 09:27

Quite often, I can't persuade DS to have any breakfast, I do make it for him. He's never been interested in breakfast but has a huge lunch and dinner. Short of force feeding him, not much I can do about it. He's happy, healthy and full of energy. he won't starve and neither will yours.

nappyaddict · 09/03/2012 09:31

For lunch I have packed:

A spinach, ham and cucumber sandwich
5 cherry tomatoes
1 banana
1 orange
1 pot of rice pudding
1 bag of organix crisps

We'll see how well he does out of that. He also isn't a big dinner eater so I try to get him to have a big lunch at school.

My 5yo DD went to school without having had breakfast this morning. Some mornings she will eat, some she won't. I encourage, but it's not worth fighting her over. My DC are not morning people (neither am I) and left to their own devices they will eat breakfast, but only about 2 hours after they get up - which clearly isn't going to happen on school days. DS does always eat something, but DD often won't. Sometimes she will eat brioche, or malt loaf. In the summer they will both eat strawberries for breakfast given half a chance.

I would worry more if it weren't for the fact that they have proper cooked lunches at school, and I know that they both eat them.

dinkystinkyandveryverybored · 09/03/2012 09:40

DS1 used to be like that - he's now nearly 6 and will eat his fruit and most of his muffin/toast/cereal which I see as a victory of sorts (as he doesnt have a snack at breaktime and tends to eat 2/3 of his lunch box I try to ensure he gets some form of carbs at breakfast for some energy for the morning).

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 10/03/2012 09:07

DD is fine but DS (now 12 yo) is a food nightmare.

When he was at infants he didn't want to go to Breakfast Club because he was scared they would make him 'eat breakfast' Confused Grin

I always make him have something starchy- cereal, which he eats dry with a glass of milk , or toast.
Somedays he'll have a yoghurt as well.

( He has to pass a BP Garage and a row of shops on the way to school so I don't want him diving in to get a load of sweets)

iseenodust · 10/03/2012 09:15

I would be encouraging a large glass of milk or a mug of hot chocolate if it was so little regularly.

ragged · 10/03/2012 09:19

I have had to do it before, sigh. If DS knew that turning down breakfast would mean delayed arrival to school, he'd do it every morning!
The school ran a "toast club" for awkward beggars like DS.

fluffygal · 10/03/2012 09:21

My oldest 4 eat two bowls of cereal every morning, they are big breakfast eaters. My 17 month old will only have a bf, no matter how much I offer other things. OP, If he doesn't want to eat anything else then what can you do? Some fruit is better then nothing. I would be more worried if you didn't try to get him to eat something rather then him refusing, one of the mums at school was giving her son 2 quality street for breakfast as she said she didn't have time to give him anything else (likes her sleep). I gently persuaded her to get some breakfast bars in so he can eat one on the bus if they don't have time for anything else.

leftmysociallifeatthedoor · 10/03/2012 09:30

Ds eats porridge and fruit for breakfast (hes 5) but if he wasnt a breakfast eater hed just have to go to school without.
