Suggestions for lactose free diet

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 06/03/2012 22:05

Dd has rotovirus and possible lactose intolerance. As I am breastfeeding her the gp has suggested we both eliminate dairy for a week and see if her funny tummy disappears. Bought Rice Dream today and Pure veg spread. The Rice Dream is lovely but the spread wasn't so good. I am used to having Yeo Valley spreadable with butter so the veg spread was a real disappointment. Any other spreads and other alternatives anyone can recommend? Thanks.

Lactose is the milk sugars (ie carbs), the protein (IIRC) is the whey and casein, so they are completely different. Proteins can pass through your bloodstream into your milk, but I don't think sugars do.

I find if I'm substituting rice milk for normal I need to use a bit less as it's quite thin. Oat milk seems to have a similar consistency to normal milk IMO.

Oat milk is really good for substituting in recipes and you can get it fortified with calcium.
The best milk I've found by far is hemp milk. Similar consistency to cow milk and nice taste, I could even tolerate it on cereal cold.
If you drink coffee then alpro hazelnut milk is absolutely delicious in it.

I get hemp milk, in a blue carton from waitrose and the alpro hazelnut is available from tesco

Reading all with interest.... I have a lactose intolerant toddler ( it's not a temporary blip but hey ho could be worse).

Interested in the Hemp milk as we have to get him off Neocate. Hates soya, hates rice, Almond milk made his bottom explode, Lactofree stuff made his eczema hellish..... Trying oat milk tomorrow.

cows milk protein can pass through bm, but if you're looking to eliminate lactose, the very first thing you would have to do is stop breastfeeding.

I made these chocolate muffins with Oat Milk thanks to your suggestions. Muffins were absolutely lovely. Really grateful for all of your ideas.

Forgot to add earlier - thanks very much for the recipe ppeatfruit. So it doesn't seem to matter too much what size the tin is?

Thanks also for all the other suggestions.

You're welcome extremely well a quiche or tart tin is usually one size isn't it? You're pinning me down and I must admit I don't usually weigh or measure things when I cook! Blush

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 11/03/2012 12:38

Tbh I don't really make quiche - so I would be using a round cake tin. Do you think that would be okay?

ppeatfruit · 11/03/2012 13:02

Yees but it's better with low sides have you got a not too big roasting tin? That'd be better than a high sided cake tin.

ppeatfruit · 12/03/2012 12:48

How did it go?

Tinkerisdead · 13/03/2012 15:19

Oh just found this thread so bookmarking to really look into. My dd2 is 5 weeks and been pooing blood for 9 days. In and out of hospital and they say its cows milk protein she is intolerant to and as others have said, lactose free doesnt help. I have to avoid all dairy and keep breastfeeding. If i cant avoid dairy or it gets too hard i have a prescription formula made of amino acids.

Just in case you think it could be the same op, ive linked the medical journal that was recommended to me. It affects breastfed babies usually as a result of a small amount of formula in the first few days of life making them oversensitive. My dd had 4oz formula after i had to have contrast dye scans and hadnt expressed quite enough milk when she was 5 days old.

Off to review scrummy recipes.

ppeatfruit · 13/03/2012 15:46

Your poor DD2 is she improving now ? thedocs I knew that giving ABs to new babies can give bad symptoms I didn't know that formula can be the same Shock

Tinkerisdead · 13/03/2012 16:08

According to article and paed at hospital its tiny amounts in exclusively breastfed babies. But interesting what you say as ive also had 2 lots of AB's and im also on blood thinners for embolism. The dairy free thing has seen an improvement but between me and her, im exhausted from the stress of it all.

extremelychocolateymilkroll · 27/03/2012 14:31

Sorry not to have responded sooner ppeatfruit. The whole family has had a bug for what seems like weeks so haven't been baking. When we're recovered will definitely give your recipe a go.
