Pulled Pork - HELP!

catinboots · 03/03/2012 12:37

I've been told about pulled pork by a couple of friends and thought I'd have a bash at doing it tomorrow.

I googled some recipes and most seem to involve Coca-Cola, condensed milk, garlic and chilli.

I've just bought a shoulder of pork from the butchers. Has anyone made this before? Or does anyone have a tried and tested recipe??

I haven't tried it yet but this recipe looked amazing when made last weekend.
I usually put the pork in the slow cooker, leave on high all day, and then make a barbecue sauce and add for the last hour or so.

I buy a "boston butt" pulled pork joint ready seasoned and just roast it, this one, I don't know if you can get it in other supermarkets, but it goes down really well with dd and dh and couldn't be easier.

Pulled pork is soooo easy and soooo good.
The cheaper and scraggier the cut of pork the better,DO NOT use good quality lean cut,it wont work.
The trick is to cook really slowly to an internal temp of 190 F ( breaks the collagen down and enables you to be able to "pull" it)
This can be done in a crock pot or on a bbq grill with indirect heat and light smoke.( The bbq way does make it taste better i believe but the crock pot works too). It takes HOURS and HOURS though.

1/2 cup brown sugar
1/4 cup paprika
1 tablespoon black pepper
1 tablespoon salt
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 tablespoon garlic powder
1 tablespoon onion powder
1 teaspoon cayenne

Pack the above rub onto your meat before you start cooking. If you use a crock put, dont put liquid in just the meat and leave it for 8 to 12 hours. ( it takes the same length of time on a BBQ,very low temp 235 f ). When it pulls apart easily with 2 forks its done. Shred the whole thing and add your favorite bbq sauce and its done :o

A good variation is to put honey and ginger on the meat before you cook it then after its done add hoisin sauce. That is really good too

We also do it in the slow cooker with Pork Loin, bbq sauce and an onion and garlic, nothing more complicated needed. The loin means it cooks to be easily pulled apart in only around 6-8 hours or so, so perfect to do first thing to eat in the evening.

Also done it with home made bbq sauce, but see little advantage in it.
