What's your favourite cook book? (The HFW thread got me thinking I need to get new cook books)

Any recommendations for new cook books, please?

My cookbook shelf is a bit boring, mostly Jamie Oliver, Nigella and Nigel Slater and the obligatory Delia. We have the HFW Meat and Fish and Hummingbird Bakery book.

I've just ordered the HFW Everyday cookbook and the veg book.

Any other books that stand out for you? I enjoy cooking, we eat most things and I like everyday stuff and some more complicated recipes.

Thanks!

Jane Grigson, Claudia Roden, Simon Hopkinson, Madhur Jaffrey are my favourites

I'm veggie and have only just discovered Yotam Ottolenghi's "Plenty". Fab book, my current fave :)

skinmysunshine · 29/02/2012 20:08

Rick Stein and Madhur Jaffrey

Hugh FW is pretty unbeatable for me at the moment, but I am a recipe book tart. Kitchen by Nigella Lawson is good for easy family food - great African Chicken recipe.

For baking, I'm working my way through Short & Sweet by Dan Lepard, but a friend gave me Outsider Tart written by 2 American bakers and I can't wait to get going on that.

Ottolenghi, both plenty and his first book. His food is very interesting flavour combination and I definitely don't feel it's more of the same.

Currently loving Bill Granger's everyday asian.

Fushia Dunlop. She has two cookbooks, one on Sichuan and one on Hunan cooking.

For quick dinners, I do like Nigel Slaters real fast food and 30 min cook. And nigella express.

Currently coveting John Gregory-Smith's Mighty Spice. I heard its very very good from multiple people.

I have the Outsider Tart book. The Mile High Brownies are out of this world.

BettyBathroom · 29/02/2012 22:18

My all time favourite is Dennis Cotter's Paradiso Seasons - interesting adventurous veggie food without the worthy healthy slant. It's food to impress - the man is a genius!

Just got Ottolenghi's Plenty and I'm falling in love - interesting veggie food, packed full of flavour with exotic hints...enough to keep me interested.

I like Cranks Fast Food too...

Whoops just slipped on Amazon and bought Real Fast Food and Ottolenghi's plenty. Am tempted by some HFW. Though I have the River Cottage Baby and Toddler book which isn't actually written by him but is amazing. I love it.

HalleLouja · 01/03/2012 10:24

Whoops and Everyday is now in my basket.

Chepstowmonkey · 01/03/2012 11:47

I agree river cottage baby and toddler recipe book is fantastic! I am working my way through the whole book season by season and there are all great.

Although I've just eaten last night's pasta and pesto from HFW veg for lunch with my DD and we love that too. I always thought homemade pesto was hassle than it was worth - I was definitely wrong!!!

Does anybody have any of the Leon books?

OracleInaCoracle · 01/03/2012 11:54

Rachel Allen might be an annoying, simpering twonk, but I love her books. no call for unicorn horn or poncification, just easy recipes that can be bastardized quite easily. this one and this one are my faves

GinwillFixit · 01/03/2012 13:13

Thank you so much everyone. So far I have ended up buying Rick Stein's Fish book and the Jane Grigson book.

I can see myself buying the Plenty book as well. Sounds fab.

The Outsider Tart could be too dangerous given I am "trying" to loose weight ...

My top 3 most used books are:

Moro

Essentials of Classic Italian Cooking

1080

All 3 have great recipes which work.

MrsMuddyPuddles · 03/03/2012 07:21

I feel like I'm lowering the tone, but Sam Stern's Eat Vegetarian and Fresh from the Vegetarian Slow Cooker by Robin Robertson get the most mileage around here.

twolittlebundles · 03/03/2012 07:29

Bill Granger's Bill's Open Kitchen is awesome, agree with Terror about Everyday Asian as well - easy and very tasty.
Madhur Jaffrey is wonderful and also love Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook (though not got loads of pretty pictures which is a bit crap).

LaVitaBellissima · 03/03/2012 07:38

Love this Peyton & Byrne for classic Baking recipes. So far I've made a retro black forest gateaux and chocolate marble cake.

otchayaniye · 04/03/2012 12:13

Claudia Roden wazzes over all other popular cookbook writers. Her we Spanish one (only out in us now) is amazing

otchayaniye · 04/03/2012 12:16

I use mai pham's pleasures of the Vietnamese table twice a week and my children love fuschia dunlops gong bao chicken so that gets wheeled out weekly
